Cory Walia on Bollywood's Emerging Make-up Trends

From Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to Raveena Tandon, Salman Khan to Aamir Khan, Shilpa Shetty to Vidya Balan, Cory Walia knows their faces like the back of his hand. Not known to be a man who minces words when it comes to advising stars on skincare, Cory credits former Miss World, Aishwarya Rai with having good skin. "But she is so hyper and does not rest enough," he says.

Of the former Bollywood actors, he rates Late Divya Bharati's skin as the best he has seen. ‘‘She had gorgeous skin. Hema Malini still maintains great skin and so does Dimple Kapadia," he says. As for male stars, Cory says Dino Morea has great skin. ‘‘He is careful about his skincare regime and is paranoid about it.''

How much has make-up on the big screen changed over the years?
It has changed drastically and dramatically! There is a new crop of internationally-trained, sophisticated make-up artists. Then there is the opening up of the Indian economy, and especially the cosmetics industry. Cosmetics were considered frivolous and heavily taxed. Today, it is the other way round. It is a hungry and growing market: big money, an influx of producers, globalization, sophisticated directors, producers, technical crew, the stars themselves and make-up artists, advances in lighting and camera technology and equipment have all contributed to the change! Today, the make-up that a socialite wears to a party is easily translated to a Bollywood look.

Which actors have really good skin?
There are quite a number of them. Raveena Tandon, Malaika Arora, Amrita Arora, Tabu, Manisha Koirala, Kareena Kapoor, Sushmita Sen and Dia Mirza. Hema Malini still maintains great skin, and so too does Dimple Kapadia. Sarika, Poonam Dhillon and Jayalalitha have such beautiful skin. But Madhubala, Meena Kumari, Asha Parekh did not. Nor did Madhuri Dixit Nene have very good skin.

When it comes to skincare, many of the present day actors are lazy. They over-work and don't give their skin time to revitalize. They do not take enough vitamins, drink enough water, eat a balanced diet or exercise; it's a combination of everything. A lot of people rely on genetics but like everything else, skin is prone to the effects of gravity. The new advances in technology are helping a lot of women, and hopefully everyone will care enough about themselves and not about their bank balance.

In fact, male actors are more conscious and aware of skincare than many of their female counterparts. Examples? Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Shahid Kapur and John Abraham. Salman Khan had good skin, but it's not so now. Arjun Rampal has naturally good skin.

Are there any companies that make make-up products for teenage skin?
There is no such thing like a range of make-up for teens. In today's world, all make-up brands emphasize skincare strongly and, if the quality of make-up is good, anybody from 16 to 60 can use it.

Are there actors for whom make-up has really worked wonders?
If an actor's features are in the correct proportion and if the person is really talented, he or she can look like a million bucks – just look at Konkona Sen Sharma. Nargis Dutt used to have very masculine features but look what great camera work, lighting, styling and sheer acting talent made her look like on screen. There were so many unglamorous roles that the Late Smita Patil took on, but even in them she looked gorgeous. My muse is Chitrangada Singh; I love her looks. She is such a wonderful girl with earthy demeanor and sophistication. She is very intelligent too.

What colors work best on people with dark skin tones?
If used correctly, every color looks great on any skin. It is important to learn about proportions. Strong deep metallic eye shadows are the way to go. I swear by kajal [kohl] and I also like the classic, deep, matte red lipstick, when combined with a basic eyeliner, you get a great look.

How best can one translate reel life make-up to real life?
Find an identifiable person that you actually resemble. Do not just go chasing your dreams and desires; be realistic. Then emulate and observe, emulate and observe. Look at magazines, check out interviews and find out where your personal individual styling stands. Read tips and learn more about them.

You have a strong view about the role of eye brows in make-up...
I feel they are the welcoming features of our face. The way you shape your eyebrows can make or mar a look. If your eyebrows are untidy and unkempt, your eyes may not look attractive. Sadly, there is a new trend of shaving off eyebrows. Imagine, actors shaving off their eyebrows!

Which Bollywood film stars' life completely changed after you gave them some tips?
Raveena Tandon, for one. I did her eyebrows for the very first time in her life. I told her to not to worry about her nose. I told her how to combine dark eyes and light lips and light eyes and dark lips. The other person who took my advice seriously a long time ago was Salman Khan. I told him how he needed to hold himself taller. There are a few things a man should do to look sophisticated, like use a deodorant and mouthwash.

How much make-up do you use on yourself?
I used to apply a lot of make-up on a daily basis and even at night. Now I use it only when I am preparing for television shows. When I was younger, I used to wear make-up when heading to a club. In fact, I was the pioneer of the make-up on men movement in India.

So are actors using make-up in their day-to-day life?
I do not know of men who use make-up in their day-to-day life but I can tell you for sure that in old Bollywood, it was a norm. Before Eastman color hit the big screen in India in the 1960s, actors like Shammi Kapoor, Jeetendra, Rajendra Kumar and Pradeep Kumar wore foundation base in purple and, over this, pink make-up. They always wanted to look fair. When you see some of the old films Jeetendra's acted in, you can't miss the way his face was painted.

Tells us about your tie up with Inglot?
My association with Inglot is pretty new but for the last couple of years, I've been a big fan of the brand – of their quality and of the payoff. Color payoff is very important; what you see in the container and what appears on the face usually differs hugely. But I am very happy with Inglot. Besides, they have a huge range available.

Finally, what are a few things every woman must keep a check on?
Water intake (eight glasses a day), shapely eyebrows, regular skincare and maintaining a good body posture. If you have a good posture and carry yourself well, even an average person can look enigmatic and dynamic.

Cory Walia on Fall 2009's Make-up Trends

One of the most well known rumours on the Bollywood circuit used to be that former Miss World, Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan shied away from posing for a photoshoot if her make-up was handled by anyone other than Cory Walia.

The celeb make-up artist has since worked on the famous faces of Katrina Kaif, Deepika Padukone, Malaika Arora-Khan, Bipasha Basu and Rani Mukherjee, to name a few.

What’s the perfect look for this season?
Berry colors ranging from pink to plum are really in this season. I can guarantee that this fall, the flawless look with heavy mascara and red lips are going to be big. The metallic look is also in. But it’s always best to go with the look that suits one’s personality.

How does one go about achieving that elusive natural look?
To get the natural look keep your make up simple and use colors that are as close to your natural skintone as possible. Use concealer to hide any spots.

And what is the one essential make-up tool for women this season?
A make-up base is very important. It gives a silky feel and evens out your skin before you apply anything else.

India Today- Woman's Beauty Pages

  1. How do you get the perfect smoky eyes?
Apply a light shade of concealer all over the top lid. Then apply a light eye shadow in a neutral tone with a larger brush all over the eye. Follow it up with a dar eye shadow over the eye lids and blend it properly towards the crease. Apply liner and smudge it. Finish the look of with mascara.
  2. What would be a good everyday make-up routine for a natural look?
Use a concealer and pressed powder all over the face. Then follow by, a neutral eye shadow and eyeliner. Apply blush to the apples of the cheeks. Finish off with mascara and lip gloss.

  3. Should the lip liner and lipstick be the same color?
Your lip liner should be neutral in color or match the shade of your lipstick. It should not be darker so that if the lipstick fades, all you have left is a ring of liner around your lips.

  4. What is the best evening make-up regime?
Stick to natural colors as unnaturally bright eye shadows make you look older. Go for smoky eyes for a dramatic look, enhance your lashes for a doe eyed effect. Use blushes and lipsticks that suit your skin tone and with lipstick make sure they don't make your teeth look dull and yellow. Do not match your lip color, that would be too matchy-matchy, a hint of color from your outfit on your eyes (or lips) looks sophisticated. When doing dramatic eyes keep the lip neutral and likewise if you're doing bold lips one down the eyes.

  5. How do I make my eyes look bigger?
Apply concealer on the top lid of the eyes, then using an eyeliner, trace the inside rim of your upper eyelashes. Dot the eyeliner between the lashes and create a line on the top of the outermost half of your eyelid. A thick line makes your eyes small. Trace the inside of your lower last line with the eyeliner, connecting it to the inner corners of your eye. Apply mascara to the upper lashes, then use mascara on the outer corner of your top eyelashes to widen your eyes.

  6. What is the perfect red for desi skin?
The perfect shades of red for desi skin would be deep red, burgundy, winem coral and peach.

  7. How do you make thin lips look fuller?
Apply concealer and foundation on your existing lip lines. Draw lines using lip liner slightly above the natural top line and above along your bottom line. Now, apply color to the entire lip and then apply lipstick from the center of your lips. Follow it up with gloss that should be applied to the center of the lip.

  8. How do you apply blush properly?
Start just below the apple of your cheeks, then sweep the blush upwards and outwards along your cheek bone.

  9. How do you use sun screen with make-up?
Apply a thin coat of sunscreen on your face. Once it has soaked into your skin, dab off the excess cream. Now, use foundation with SPF for added protection.

  10. How do you get long and healthy nails?
Bathe your nails in salt water as it makes them stronger. After 10 to 15 minutesm use a manicure set to remove the cuticles. Be careful not to cut into your nail bed. Use a nail buffer and nail file to shape your nails. Apple a cuticle cream, massaging it into your nails. You can also use a vitamin E oil or cream for your nails. Make sure you carry a nail file or buffer so that you can quickly file you nails in case they break or chip to prevent further damage.

  11. How do you cover under-eye dark circles?
Apply eye cream under your eyes, then dab concealer, applying it over the dark circles. Apply foundation, but only a fine layer. Use an eye shadow that will lessen the dark shade under your eyes.

  12. How do you make a round face look thinner?
Apply your normal shade of foundation then use a bronxer that is a shade darker than your skin tone, running the brush along your jaw line. Contour your temples brushing up and out. Use bronzer along the hollow areas of your cheeks for an angular look. Put a soft blush on the apples of your cheeks and at the highest point of your cheekbones apply a sheer highlighter. Now lightly dust translucent powder on your face for an airbrushed touch.

  13. What are the best colors for the Indian skin tone
The best color for Indian skin tone are browns, deep brick redm plum burgundy, copper, beige and orange.

  14. How do you get rid of a shiny house?
When you are applying moisturizer to the face, avoid the nose. Instead use make-up primers or moisturizers that have mattifying properties as it will keep the shine off the nose for long hours. Use powder for your nose, but make sure the finish looks natural.

  15. How do you hide a hickey or a pimple?
Put ice on it right away and the size of the hickey/pimple will reduce. Now, yse a green cream concealer as it will either hide it completely or at least make it a little less noticeable. Apply a thick layer of foundation, blending it into the entire neck (for hickeys) or part of the face (where the pimple is) and top it with some powder. Make sure you use a shade slightly darker than your skin tone.

Dominic Cruz for Kryolan Talks Make-up Trends for 2009

Make-up is more than just a dash of color. Used well, it can transform you. As it does on screen, on the ramp and in real life.

Kryolan, one of the leaders in professional make-up, has almost everything you would need for a bit of color or a complete disguise: a range of beauty and skincare products to blood, scars, burns and prosthetics for special effects in films.

The brand held a workshop in the city recently, conducted by make-up artist Dominic Cruz who is a part of Kryolan’s educational and international design team.

Make-up items we should always carry in our purse?
Moisturizer, neutral lip color, lip pencil, eyeliner, a base foundation, mascara and lip balm.

What is the biggest make-up faux pas?
Foundation that clashes with your skin tone, the wrong shadows applied in the wrong manner and wrong brow shapes.

What are the top international trends in make-up?
The trend seems to be going back to the 1970s with influences of the mod look, Afro and crazy shadows. There are different looks to go with the different seasons that range from a varied, bright, color palette and tangerines for the spring season to UV colors with lots of yellows and pinks for summer. The fall season has more sober monochromes that go back to the 1930s and 1940s and to top it all off, there are the over the top bright burgundy shades for winter that emerge as a change from a conservative look.

What should we watch out for while buying make-up?
It is always important to keep in mind what your skin needs and what your look is going to be. Do enough research, look at magazines and study your face and get the lines and colors right. Find a good salon and get professional help to stay abreast of new trends.

What are effective ways to conceal facial flaws or deformities?
The Dermacolour line of products is meant for this purpose and can be used by professionals as well as non-professionals. Waterproof and high pigment-based make-up can camouflage abnormalities like basic discoloration, pimples and post surgical scars.

Who do you dream to work on?
Angelina Jolie with her classic angular look would be a pleasure to work on. Cameron Diaz with her bleached Californian look also has an interesting face.

Which celebrity has the worst make-up?
Ellen DeGeneres. I think her looks could be much enhanced with the proper kind of make-up.

Which celebrity has the best make-up?
Cher

What Kryolan products are most suitable for desi skin?
The Dermacolour range survives heat and humidity and is waterproof. It covers dark circles which seems to be quite a problem around here and with over a hundred shades, there are enough tones for all kinds of skin color. This apart, the Shimmering Events collection with bronze and gold tints are quite flattering for desi skin tones.

What are your plans for opening more stores?
We have just launched our whole range here which will be available at select cosmetic stores, salons and through our distributors.

How competent are make-up professionals in India compared to international standards?
The styles are very different and the Indian style of make-up is largely traditional. As far as professional make-up is concerned, it is still the pancake style which is heavy and this workshop was trying to inform them about lighter professional make-up and the options it affords.

Tell us a bit about make-up as an art form...
It is important to create the right skin tone by blending colors and gliding the brush over a face, which is a lot like being an artist. The idea is to enhance natural beauty as well as address the client’s needs and achieve what they are looking for! As far as make-up for the stage is concerned, high definition cameras can be quite brutal and unforgiving and make-up is a must! Also, the actor can portray different characters and different moods not only with his/her acting skills but also with the help of make-up.

Is Kryolan restricted to professional make-up?
Kryolan provides make-up that can be used by ordinary people with proper instructions and skincare items that can be used on a daily basis.

What is Kryolan’s contribution to theatrical make-up?
Kryolan makes high-definition make-up for high-resolution cameras. We study the face and human body and then work with the cameramen, actors and lights people to come up with the right look that will work under the arc lights. For example, for special effects or when you are trying to age someone, the wrinkles need to be properly created.

Make-up or no make-up? What is best for skin?
At the end of the day, no make-up is the best thing for your skin as it allows your pores to be free and your skin to breathe.

Vimi Joshi on M.A.C and Her Aspirations

It's difficult to think of anyone that exudes the M.A.C philosophy better than professional make-up artist Vimi Joshi. It is therefore not surprising that she is the ambassador for the international make-up brand for the Middle East and India. Joshi, originally of Indian descent, fulfilled her childhood dream at last year's IIFA Weekend where M.A.C did the makeup for all the Bollywood stars who performed. "It was a great honor to be part of the IIFA Awards this year and the year before to lead and direct an entire make-up team during the event," enthuses Joshi. "We had 42 make-up artists from around the world come to Dubai and Yorkshire to support this event."

Crazy moments
She went on to describe the electric atmosphere behind the scenes. "It took a lot of preparation and planning to organize the artistry backstage. There was so much going on at the same time in different locations." "We had a few crazy moments but that's to be expected." Joshi, whose career in the make-up industry has spanned over a decade, has worked on many celebrities from Hollywood and Bollywood. "They really are some of the most amazing and down to earth people."

More experimental
With such a wealth of make-up knowledge I couldn't help but wonder if there was one make-up product Joshi couldn't live without? "M.A.C Smolder Eye Kohl and Ornamental Lusterglass. I am also addicted to Zoom Lash Mascara in Zoomblack, it has an incredible effect on your lashes." Joshi lights up from within when I mention her unique role in the Middle East and India. She is currently in and about the UAE, where she resides, conducting self-help make-up and beauty classes for local women. "It's important for women in this region to keep an open mind when it comes to make-up." Her main advice: "Try and see yourself in different ways and be a little experimental."

Step forward
"The women in this region are very comfortable wearing heavier make-up. It a part of the culture to wear lots of make-up and it is encouraged by their friends and their family. The good thing is to see how willing they are to modernize their make-up." Encouraged by the positive responses to her make-up classes, Joshi continued, "They are slowly moving towards their own skin tone and having their foundation more blended and using techniques to contour and highlight their skin, as opposed to using a full coverage foundation that is much lighter than their natural skin tone."

Practice makes perfect
Joshi is not only a great ambassador for M.A.C but an inspiration to any budding make-up artist. "If anyone is contemplating a career in the make-up industry, I say go for it! It's an incredible career. Learn as much as you can from people that inspire you. And lastly, practice, practice, practice!

In Conversation with Make-up Artist: Gouri Kapur

Gouri Kapur was kind enough to take out some time for me. Not only is she fiercely talented, but what really exudes her beauty is her kind heart. She is super sweet, generous, and absolutely gorgeous, she sits down to answer some of mine and my wonderful readers' make-up and beauty related questions.

Make-up artist Gouri Kapur, isn't she breathtakingly gorgeous herself?

i♥makeup: What made you choose make-up artistry as a profession?
Gouri: Faces fascinated me … I was an artist and extremely creative mostly every piece of art that I created had a face in it that’s when I decided since faces intrigue me why don’t I get into make up my passion for faces drove me towards this art.

i♥makeup: What are your steps for a flawless face?
Gouri: Firstly essential skin care is good make up as “less is more” works really well on good skin but lets face it we all have a certain amount of flaws we like to conceal hence the first step to creating a flawless face is to get rid of the flaws like pigmentation zit spots and dark circles and create our own canvas to work on.

i♥makeup: I love M.A.C, it's my favorite cosmetics brand, what are your favorite products from that line?
Gouri: M.A.C is a great make up brand with brilliant color pallets I personally love their pigments, their bronzers, their colored eyeliners and lip tints.

i♥makeup: What are your favorite make-up brands?
Gouri: My personal favorites are M.A.C , Bobbi Brown, Chanel and Make-Up Forever.

i♥makeup: Could you give us a few make-up products that suit desi skin tones?
Gouri: Bobbi Brown has great colors to suit some of the desi skin tones and so does M.A.C but unfortunately with foundations, Asians are the most complicated colored people. Sometimes we have two to three tones on our skin and only a one tone foundation does not suit our skin making it look ashy and patchy therefore we customize and train our clients into using colors that complement their skin tones.

i♥makeup: How does make-up help define a woman's personality?
Gouri: “Make up completes you “ it empowers you with the right tips and tricks to look “ you “ it complements your mood and gives you the confidence.

i♥makeup: How would you define true beauty?
Gouri: True beauty to me is a balance of the inner and the outer beauty .

i♥makeup: What is a quick way to change a day look to a special occasion or nighttime face?
Gouri: Deepen the colors for the night, increase your eyeshadow, add the liner, a shimmery blush and gloss or hot bright lips and a little extra mascara and you are ready to take the night on.

i♥makeup: What advice can you offer women on how to best choose the right colors for their face?
Gouri: There are different faces with different shapes and colors but the simplest way to remember any color to complement your skin tone is choose the warm/cool theory – women with olive toned complexions look best in warm colors (yellow based) and women with fairer skin look better in cool (blue based) colors.

i♥makeup: What is the most important make-up tip we all should consider?
Gouri: Its not about how much of make up we use on our skin its about what make up we use on our skin the right colours and application are an extremely essential step hence remember once you identify your make up eg – concealer / foundation you would realize just a bit of it works wonders also never skip your mascara it truly opens your eyes

i♥makeup: What is the best way for a woman to improve her overall beauty?
Gouri: Staying positive for one because that radiates on your body your skin your hair and your face that’s the easiest way to improve your overall beauty. Make an effort to indulge rightly with the right know how on skin , hair and body spend five minutes in the morning and five minutes before bed time to ensure that you stay beautiful throughout. Beauty does not come overnight - it comes over time. Make fitness your mantra. Heard it time and time again but it works - Drink plenty of water

i♥makeup: What are the current make-up trends for 2008?
Gouri: The current trends are all about color, red is back . Colors on your eyes are in vogue in a big way and are a great way to add glamour instantly. Bold colors on your lips look great if you team it with the right attitude.

i♥makeup: What advice do you have for aspiring make-up artists?
Gouri: There are loads of places teaching you make-up but either they have insufficient knowledge or lack of professionalism that get you nowhere. Ensure you have done a thorough check on what you want from the institute- the basic requirements of an aspiring Make-up artist would be that they must be artistically inclined and must possess a well-developed sense of color and form. Imagination, initiative and originality are important qualities. Manual dexterity is essential. Because make-up artists work with people: friendliness, patience and tact are very important qualities they must possess. Make-up artists must also be adaptable to long and irregular working hours.

i♥makeup: How much art is actually involved in make-up application?
Gouri: Being a make-up artist means dealing with all sorts of people...not just the drop dead gorgeous so if you don't know how to create a face for which art is a basic criteria you could land up being a disaster at your job.

i♥makeup: What are some beauty essentials for women on the go?
Gouri: As far as what goes into the bag-the following list contains everything for a woman on the go . You are the best judge of what you need. If something listed just doesn't fit your needs, leave it out-there is no sense putting something in your bag you will never use. Here's what's in my make-up bag:
  • Tiny comb/brush
  • Concealer
  • Mirror if u have a clear one with the blusher or compact would suffice
  • Compact of translucent powder if u have oily skin: M.A.C Select Sheer Pressed Powder
  • Cream blush: M.A.C Blushcreme in Brit Wit for the day and M.A.C Blushcreme in Laid Back for the evening.
  • Foundation: Chanel Pro Lumiere Professional Finish Make up Fond de Teint
  • Moisturizer: The Body Shop, even though it does you no good to put moisturizer on when you already have foundation on your skin, it is a good idea to keep some with you for days when you aren't wearing foundation and your skin will need moisture. It's also great for moisturizing dry hands, and for any other moments when you will need it (it's easier to have it in the bag than to try to remember to put it there on days when you know you will want it). Keep the moisturizer in a tiny plastic container well sealed. Again, try to pick up a sample size that is small enough to carry around in your bag.
  • Lipstick pencil: M.A.C Lip Pencil in Hover.
  • Lipstick: M.A.C Lipstick in Soft Lust. The easy application one like a pot or a the one with a brush - if you are used to tubes then a lip brush applicator to go with it.
  • Powder blush: Chanel Powder Blush in Fantasia. This is crucial so you can always touch up with color. Remember, use the cream in the morning and touch up during the day with powder. Also remember that you can put some over your eyebrows, on your chin, the tip of your nose, and on your neck for an added glow.
  • Blush brush: M.A.C 129 Blush Brush
  • Eye shadow: Gouri uses her blush as her eye shadow, Chanel Powder Blush in Fantasia. A earthy neutral shade is wonderful to open up the eyes or the blush could be doubled up as an eyeshadow.
  • Mascara: M.A.C Zoom Lash in Zoomblack or M.A.C Pro Lash in Coal Black
  • Eyebrow pencil: Make Up For Ever Eye Brow Enhancers in Brown Black. This pencil is great for touching up your eyebrows and is terrific for drawing a line in your lower lid, in the corners of your eyes, and for touching up your eye liner.
  • Eye liner: M.A.C Fluidline and M.A.C 266 Small Angle Brush. Use this to touch up your eye liner or add it on for a sudden evening out.
  • Tweezers: Stray hairs in your eyebrows or upper lip
  • Band-Aid: I carry just one for emergencies.
  • Atomizer of perfume: Versace Bright Crystal Perfume. This is wonderful for a pick-me-up scent.
  • Saline solution: Visine Eye Drops. A small bottle of commercial saline solution does wonders for tired eyes at any time of the day. It soothes safely, and makes your eyes sparkle.
That's it. It may sound like a lot of things, but gather them around, put them into that little bag, and you'll be delighted and surprised at how easily they fit and how efficiently the whole combination of items works.

i♥makeup:
What's the worst thing a woman can do to her face?
Gouri: Not taking care of it as mentioned beauty does not come overnight it’s a process hence learn the systematic approach to it don’t wait till the last minute – you got a problem consult a specialist immediately – and please do not follow or use things blindly .

i♥makeup: What do you think are best/worst trends in the beauty industry right now?
Gouri: The best trends in vogue are the “COLORS” earlier there was a dearth of it and we had to create it, now with many make up brands coming in, life and make up just gets easier.

i♥makeup:
What make-up magazines/websites do you read regularly, for inspiration?
Gouri: Anything I get my hands on, as you never know what could be your inspiration

Shobhna: Before and After, the transformation is beautiful
Make-up by: Gouri Kapur

i♥makeup reader, An Indian's Make-up Musings: Which would be the best concealer for a lightweight - almost nothing kind of feeling, yet capable of hiding the dark circles and not settling on the creases?
Gouri: Since I run an institute we customize the concealer as per the skin tone after studying the skin type and texture as professional concealers are very different from the ones available readily in the market.

i♥makeup reader, An Indian's Make-up Musings: How does one match lipsticks with eye shadows?
Gouri: Light lips with dark eyes and vice versa is fine but what do you wear with colors like rust brown and such, which are not that dark, but definitely not light. Rust brown is a great earthy colour for wheatish skin tones it complements gold and red very well for example, team up a rust eyeshadow with red lips or peachy orange glossy lips if you not a bold colored person. Similarly rust lips with gold eyeshadow or a dual gold and rust eyeshadow would look great and add more zing .

i♥makeup reader, An Indian's Make-up Musings: Do you have any "secret" make up tip to achieve the flawless - no makeup look for this spring on a person who has less than flawless face?
Gouri: All my secrets are revealed in my simplified make-up workshop for 2 days. As the right products teamed with the right application is the secret to a well done up – flawless looking face.

i♥makeup reader: What is the best bronzer for this summer? -
Gouri: I personally like M.A.C Gold Refined Bronzer as it goes with most of the skin tones and comes as a pressed powder, therefore it's great for any season

i♥makeup reader: Is black liner still in?
Gouri: Retro is in vogue in a big way and liner plays a great role in achieving that 'Audrey Hepburn Look'.

i♥makeup reader: If you had to recommend a tinted moisturizer what would it be?
Gouri: I prefer creating it myself with a blend of moisturizer and a touch of foundation to give a sheer, clean and fresh look.

Gouri Kapur is a freelance makeup artist and a grooming consultant and has worked in all areas of the fashion and entertainment industry and now runs her grooming institute where she teaches professional make up to aspiring make up artists and also transforms people empowering them with knowledge and how to stay gorgeous.

M.U.A Cory Walia Talks About His Eye Make-up Favorites

Make up artist Cory Walia lets us in on his favorite make up:
Eyeliners

Cory's Tip - Metallic colors are really hot these days. Use the ones by M.A.C and Lakme and go wild with color.

To Shadow your Eyes

What Cory looks for:
"Good eye shadows are those whose color is rich and texture smooth. Some eye shadows look very attractive in their packages but when you use them the powder is dry or falls on the lashes. This shouldn't happen," says Cory.

On cream eye shadows?
Cream eye shadows are not too great for Indians as the sweat etc. will get it off, also it collect in the creases of the skin. Using cream eye shadows in cities where the whether is cool is a good idea. Cream eye shadows give a beautiful finish, so what you can so is top it with powder eye shadow to stabilize the color.

Kohl Pencils

Cory's Home Made Kohl Recipe
Cory uses home made kohl. You can make kohl at home by burning a ghee diya with camphor; you then collect the soot in the diya. The soot is then mixed with ghee and applied. In the old days, pearls were also burned to make kohl. Cory mixes black eye shadow powder to his home made kohl and then uses it on his clients.

Mascaras
"Mascaras are a very very important part of your make-up," says Cory Walia.

Cory says:
"Even though all brands have mascaras, I'm very picky about what I like. That's why the two listed above are the only ones that I use."

Short Bytes with Mickey Contractor

MICKEY CONTRACTOR, Bollywood's leading make-up artist, and M.A.C India's Director, speaks on the changing look of Bollywood.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan looking fresh and gorgeous
  • How would you describe the look that’s in this year?
It’s the bare look. I believe less is more. For example, I gave Aishwarya Rai Bachchan fresh, no make-up look for her Lux Provacatuer Launch. She has minimal make-up on, but it appears that she has none, except for eye liner. Make-up now has become subtler than in the eighties. I am waiting for the day when we can do away with false eyelashes and lipsticks when we show an actress mourning or just waking up from bed.

  • You’ve done Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna where you’ve given the actors a glamorous look...
I’ve worked with Karan Johar in Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and K3G and understand what he requires. I’ve done the look for Rani Mukherjee. I’d given different looks to the two different ladies but I avoided taking up Preity’s part since I did not want it to clash with that of Rani. I usually avoid working with the actresses in the same age group to avoid ego clashes.

  • Have you been approached by filmmakers down South?
Not until now. I think my budget is slightly higher for them. I’ve noticed that some southern filmmakers like Mani Ratnam have, of late, gone in for the subtle look.
  • Hypothetically speaking, if you had worked in Devdas, would you have given the lead artists a different look?
I would have made Paro and Chandramukhi look more authentic.
  • What are your future projects?
I work on one film at a time. I’ll be doing Yash Johar’s next production, Tashan; Goldie Behl's Drona; and Harry Baweja's Love Story 2050. I work only with directors and actresses who’re willing to experiment. Stars like Priyanka, Kajol, Aishwarya, and Kareena are very open to trying out different looks. It’s taken me 24 years to succeed in cutting down on heavy make-up. Hopefully, in another five years, I’ll be able to bring in the Hollywood kind of bare, fresh look.

Make-up Talk with Sonu Verma

  • What was it like doing make-up on Bollywood stars?
At first I felt a bit nervous, it was like I was doing an exam or a test. But then it was really exciting, wow! I felt I am actually making the stars look better. But then I know that a face is a face whoever it is. We are all the same. I have to do a job and do it to my best ability.

  • Do these stars expect a lot?
No, they never expect a lot or any special treatment. They are also doing a job just like me. And they know that we all have to work as a team.
  • Have you ever ruined any of their make-up or were any of them not satisfied with your work?
Generally, before I start to apply make up on anyone be it a star, a newsreader or a presenter, I always ask them what they prefer. So normally, once I begin they are aware of what I am doing. Make up can always be removed or added if necessary. So the answer is everyone is satisfied.
  • With Indian soaps the make-up is pasted on? Is this what you have to do or do you try and use your own style, look and technique?
Soap opears in India are almost quite theatrical, as though they are on stage which is why the make up is slightly more than usual. The approach I use for Indian soap operas is to accentuate the features and try and make them more prominent. That's the look generally that the directors want.
  • How different is it working in India compared to the U.K?
The style of make up in India is certainly different to the UK. Also, I have noticed that the majority of make up artists in the UK are female, whereas in India its practically all male. India still loves the glamorous and glittery look, even for news anchors and chefs who are doing cookery shows! The UK is more subtle but nonetheless exciting and creative. The people are lovely and are pleasantly surprised to see a male make up artist.
  • How did you start working in Bollywood?
I started working in the make up industry five years ago as an apprentice with my master who I watched at work. So it was on the job training for me. Working in Bollywood is very hard work and not as glamorous as it may appear. I have to make sure that I get my side of the work done especially when one is working in a team. We all have to work together in order to get it right. Plus in certain areas of India the hours are often very long with no overtime which I feel is bad.
  • Has it been a difficult industry to break into in Bollywood and the UK?
Yes, I wouldn't say it was easy, but it can be done through hard work. It has taken me five years and there are thousands of make up artists in India. You have to be a little bit different to stand out from the rest, and the same applies here in the UK I suppose.
  • Which industry do you prefer?
Actually I like them both for different reasons – India because it's my homeland and the UK because I love the people.
  • What do you want to do in the future? What do you hope to achieve?
Like everyone else I have dreams. To make a little more money than I currently earn and meet many new faces, because everyday is a fresh challenge for me. I hope I can make a benchmark for other make up artists to follow and to be treated fairly in the industry. These are some of the things I hope to achieve.

  • What stars would you like to work with next?
If I ever in my entire life I would get just one chance to do make up it would be for Madonna.
  • Who is your inspiration and role model?
I suppose my parents are my inspiration and my role model would be my master who trained me.
  • You must have built up a great portfolio as you have done work with Pepsi, Jolen, Samsung etc. Tell us more ....
I take each job as it comes, as each job is different. But the key to all the jobs is to make the person who's make up I am applying happy. They are all big brand names but that doesn't really bother me.
  • Any make-up tips you'd like to share?
I get asked what is the most important beauty product to have in a woman's handbag and I always say that you cannot go wrong with lipgloss. One application can make a huge difference to one's appearance and can perk you up within seconds.
  • What is so unique about your make-up?
I hope I have a modern approach to make up where less is more. I do not think that putting on lots of make up will make someone look good on the screen unless you are doing an Indian serial and the director requests the heavy style. But in general, when I do a person's make up, I look at their best features and highlight them through make up.
  • Do you find it hard finding the right color foundation for Asians in the UK?
Yes, I have found it a little bit difficult as the market seems to be more for European skins.
  • Why do actors in Bollywood and soap opears apply so much make-up in your opinion? Do you prefer the natural look?
Maybe it because once the film is printed the heavy make up would look kind of normal, plus Bollywood and the serials are all about glamour, fantasy and escapism not real life. But personally, I prefer the natural look.
  • Would you like to change the fact that they apply so much make-up in Bollywood?
Yes, I would especially during scenes when for example a woman has just woken up and got out of bed. In real life, no one would be all dolled up like that so it's not realistic. Or even in some hospital scenes, where they look like they've just painted their face.
  • Which actress applies the best make-up in Hollywood or Bollywood?
Bollywood and Hollywood both have different styles. And they work for both genres in their own ways. No make up is better than the other. They are both necessary for the approach to the look they want to achieve.

Beauty Questions Answered

Dear imake-up readers,

I am finally back after a long and much needed break. I really missed you all and blogging. I came back to almost 500 unread messages in my inbox. I have decided to answer all your beauty related questions in this one post. It feels great to be back.
  • zara: Indian ppl's lps are gentically quite dark,How do the makeup artists get their lips looking so pale? Surely it has to be more than simply lipstick. like bipasha basu for example.please email back
    Dear zara,
Most make-up artists use a layer of concealer or foundation over the lips before applying lipsticks, so that the true color of the lipsticks/glosses is shown as opposed to it mixing with the color of the lips.

  • anshu7: hi hun.which lipstick can give me this look? http://www.pinkvilla.com/?q=node/14574
    Dear anshu7,
It looks like L'Oreal's Aishwarya Beige lipstick to me. She is usually found wearing that since she is the brand ambassador, and because it's her lipstick:)

  • ria: which part of the face do is good to highlight, to give the face a volume or shape?? The application of the black Eyeliner around celina jaitley's eyes is done so perfectly, BUT does she use "black eyeshadow" as well to get that effect? can you pretty plsss answer my question on forum pinkvilla make up "fine art of sculpture and contour and Celina Jaitley's eye makeup. NEED YOUR ADVISE AND TIPS. thank you xx
    Dear ria,
To give the face a sculpted, yet defined look, I would suggest contouring the cheeks, with a bronzer. This makes your face look defined and enhances your cheekbones. In many pictures, it looks like she does use a liquid liner as well as black eyeshadow on top of it to give a darker, smokier effect. I know she uses M.A.C, so try M.A.C Fluidline in Blacktrack and M.A.C Eye Shadow in Black Tied for a similar effect. Ria, if you could post the link from Pinkvilla here, it would be greatly appreciated.
  • Jasmine: what colors does aishwarya use in umaro jaan? i have tried to look for that lipstick but cant find it anywhere. Please help
    Dear Jasmine,
I have done a make-up breakdown of Ash's in Umrao Jaan here, Ash uses a lot of golds and neutrals in Umrao Jaan.

  • Rani: were can i buy some Kiehls moisturizer from ??
    Dear Rani,
Kiehl's is available at Saks Fifth Avenue as well as online. You can buy it here.

  • Ainy: That breakdown isnt the one i wanted...i am not talking bout the anne french one...doesnt my name direct you to the exact picture?
    Dear Ainy,
I had been busy last month, and didn't have time to do a lot of breakdowns, but if you still want the breakdown, send me the link, and I'll have it up asap. Sorry for the confusion.
  • pinkvilla: hey could you pls tell me how does shilpa's nose look small when she does up her make up since her nose is not tht small is thr a certain trick??
    Dear pinkvilla,
    • Apply darker shade of foundation on either side of the bridge of the nose.
    • Extend down along each side of the nose and blend.
    • Apply a thin line of a lighter shade of foundation down center of nose and blend.
    • To correct wide nostrils, apply darker shade on sides of nostrils and blend.

  • nicky: Hiya, Could you please post how to get this look. (the second picture)I love it but not sure how to go about it. Would be really grateful. Thanks
    Dear nicky,
I should have it up soon. Thanks for stopping by.

  • Anonymous: Hey there.. When you get back from your trip, can you please do a makeup breakdown of Parminder Nagra's?
    Dear Anonymous,
If you could direct me to link of a specific breakdown I would have a clearer picture of what you had in mind. If not, I will randomly choose a picture and post a breakdown for you. Thanks for stopping by.
