Make-up Trend: Teal Eyes

Bollywood's all about the teal-blue trend when it comes to clothes and now eyeshadow! But Deepika brought it to an entirely new—and literal—level in the new movie Billo Barber. She gave smoky eyes a twist by combining shades of teal and blue on her lids for a sultry, metallic look.

To prevent your shadow from fading or creasing, prime your lids with a colored base, like in this case we used M.A.C Delft Paint Pot.

Make-up Trend: Volumized, Luscious Lashes

This is what makeup artist Aniruddha Chakladar calls the combination of a strong, defined brow, individual lashes and berry stain on the lips “super striking” on Deepika Padukone.

To create the thick-lash look, he used “as many short individual lashes as possible on both the top and bottom lash lines. I then applied a very fine line of eyeliner and many coats of mascara.”

Vimi Joshi Talks DIFF and S/S 09 Make-up Trends

When people ask Vimi Joshi where she lives, she quickly responds with, "Emirates Airlines, seat 7A." As senior make-up artist, India and Middle East, for M.A.C Cosmetics, spending most of her life airborne is just one of the perks of an already fascinating job.

However, Vimi will be in her hometown of Dubai this week, working her magic on the stars at the 5th Dubai International Film festival (DIFF). In previous years, Vimi has worked on Richard Gere, Oliver Stone and Albert Brookes. (Yes, gentlemen also wear make-up, Vimi informs us, but it's not so much mascara as mattifying powder to take off the sheen when they are under the lights.)

"This year, among the stars who have confirmed their appointments are Sonam Kapoor and her sister Rhea. Sonam is a dear friend, always open to experimentation, and possibly the star I have made up the most. I also worked with the cast of Slumdog Millionaire at the Toronto Film Festival and I'm excited to meet them again at DIFF," says Vimi, settling down in a soundproof M.A.C green room tucked away in the brand's store in Mercato Mall.

"What's so great about DIFF is that you can go over the top with make-up. One can be creative, because the stars want more: You can bring out the crystal, the glitter, the lashes, and its full-on glamour — especially with the Indian and Middle Eastern celebrities," she exclaims.

Among Arab film stars, Vimi has worked with the likes of Yousra and Leila Aloui. Hollywood stars, though, prefer to keep it relatively natural and usually opt for a little bronzer and/or nude make-up. "They want to look like themselves," Vimi explains.

M.A.C has two services lined up for the stars, invitees and guests at the festival: a make-up suite at the Al-Qasr Hotel and on-call appointments for A-listers, who prefer a personalized session in the privacy of their suite. When on call for en-suite appointments, a make-up artist never knows who is going to ring them up or just drop by. On other occasions, an artist could spend most of a day making sure a single celebrity looks perfect for a series of media engagements. During DIFF, on-air talent and guests can get their make-up touched-up at a dedicated lounge, located in the media centre at the Madinat Jumeirah.

Frequent flyer
Joshi also travels to the international fashion weeks in London, New York, Milan and Paris. For a month each year, she works with some of the top make-up artists in the world, the likes of Charlotte Tilbury, Val Garland, and Tom Pecheux, "keying" in the look on the most famous runways in the world. "I lay out the products for make-up artists to use. Thus we are able to test products backstage for a month during the fashion weeks. These are followed by recap meetings, where we give enormous amounts of feedback. M.A.C listens to us, and then a collection is launched."

Despite Vimi's cover-girl looks, she prefers being behind the scenes. "Being a celebrity is not an easy job, with the world watching your every move. To bring that amount of glamour, attention to detail and perfection, each and every day — hat's off to them!" Of her looks, she confesses she needs an hour to get ready every day. "Being part of the beauty industry, it's only natural that you take care of yourself. And when you do something so regularly, it is a habit. I need that hour-long ritual of getting ready."

Along with another senior M.A.C make-up artist, Mickey Contractor, Joshi has spent the last year creating four foundation and concealer shades (NC41, 42.5, 44.5 and 46) specifically for Indian and Middle Eastern skin tones. "The most common make-up mistake I see is women going for a foundation lighter than their skin tone," Vimi says. Especially now with the trend for organic, earthy and natural tones, a look based on lighter foundation can appear dated.

"Make-up is extremely personal and you need to celebrate your own individuality. Through the power of make-up, you can recreate yourself every day. If you want to try something, go ahead and do it — it's only make-up, it can be washed off! I would urge women to have fun with it."

Born in Uganda, Vimi grew up in a traditional Indian family that immigrated to England in 1972. "For my parents, my career options were limited to doctor, lawyer, accountant or marriage. I started working in the medical industry and soon enough realized my heart and soul were not in it." In her early 20s, she moved to London and bumped into a group of friends who were part of the music industry. On weekends, she hung around the sets of pop music videos, as a background dancer.

"I was fascinated with the make-up artists who came in on the sets. Through the power of some products and a brush, they were able to transform people. Not only was there a physical transformation, but also a radical personality shift that happened before my eyes," Vimi recalls.
When she told her family that she wanted to be a make-up artist, her mother gave her one year to prove herself.

Vimi built a successful career in that year, working on celebrities and pop stars. Invited by Shaikh Majid of the Kuwaiti ruling family to advise on a newly opened chain of make-up stores, she then moved to the Middle East. "It was supposed to be for just three months. Now, 12 years later, I am still here!" she laughs.

Seventh Heaven
Vimi says she felt like a child in a candy store when she saw what Arab women liked. "It was all ‘more is more,' with lots of color and texture. I was in seventh heaven!" She moved to Dubai in her current role, finally getting to see her country of origin on a shoot for M.A.C.

So what has she learned in the 13 years of practicing her craft? "When I started out, I used to approach make-up with the feeling, ‘I have to show you how much I can do!' I think I have learned to respect everyone's needs," Vimi muses.

"After all, I am there to inspire and make you feel beautiful, and your perception of beauty may differ from mine. Sometimes just a little mascara is enough for someone to feel like a goddess. Along the way, I have learned to listen, to respect people's needs and their limitations."

Vimi Joshi would love to M.A.C-over…
  • Amy Winehouse: I love her look. She's really brought back eyeliner with a vengeance, becoming a bit of a beauty icon. While working backstage with Mickey at the Delhi Fashion Week, we had so many designers requesting the Amy Winehouse eyeliner. More power to her!

  • Rakhi Sawant: I think she is open to experimenting with her look as well and is not afraid to be who she is. I love her no-holds barred attitude and the fact that she celebrates who she is. With her, I would go full out on the glamour — with sparkles and lashes.

  • Aishwarya Rai: To me, she is the most beautiful woman in the world. It's my dream to work with her someday. I'd keep her look really classic – beautiful skin, glossy lips and make-up based around her beautiful eyes just shining through.

  • Samantha Ronson: She's a bit androgynous. With her, I'd keep the make-up really natural and minimal – groomed brows, a bit of mascara and gloss, that's it.
Famous faces Vimi Joshi has worked on:

Richard Gere, Kurt Russell, Oliver Stone, Albert Brooks, Trudie Styler, Steven Tyler, Dita Von Teese, Rachel Hunter, Amitabh Bachchan, Gurinder Chaddha, Helen, Asha Bhosle, Vidya Balan, Bipasha Basu, Mira Nair, Deepa Mehta

The look 'du jour'
The biggest trend we are about to see in the coming months is a whole lot of nothing. It would seem there is no make-up on, just beautiful skin — the kind that looks straight out of the pages of a fashion magazine," says Vimi.

"It's achieved using techniques that contour and highlight the skin. People are going to pay more attention to hydrating, priming, contouring and sculpting. Beautiful skin is the best canvas; you don't need more products after that."

Make-up Trends: Purple Eye Shadow

Anjana Sukhani shows us that it's time to embrace purple around the eyes—without looking like a wrestler.

Clear eyes and cover-up are key with this look. Find a good peach-toned concealer to camouflage dark circles and use a few drops of Visine to eliminate any redness.

Spring/Summer 2009: Givenchy's Maharani Collection

After the glorious Indian inspired collections 2008 brought us: Lancome Maharani Jewels and Manish Arora for M.A.C Cosmetics, comes another India inspired make-up collection by Givenchy.

This wonderful information comes from Nicolas Degennes' personal website, where he has updated it to feature his Spring/Summer collection. To view the entire collection, and his own little notes for the collection, click here.

"
Like a Bollywood film, Nicolas Degennes creates an extravaganza of color to make everyday life a dream. “I saw India as a bombardment of colors bursting forth to the rhythm of filmi music. I had already been a fan of this infectious, upbeat music for a long time, but of course it was the imagery that really grabbed me — Bollywood and its palettes of colors burst with beams of light. Melodramatic love stories… But love stories all the same, with all the emotion, the ardor, the passion of hearts that are torn apart and the struggle through hardship… The stuff of life! And the women! So beautiful, vivacious, dazzling… … and yet so sweetly demure. A homage to Indian beauty, heightened with a discreet air of eroticism and anchored in the purest tradition. What I adore in these love sagas is the eternal femininity in a showcase of flashy, ultra-kitsch glamour and gaudy music."

The Collection
Precious Sari Glitter Eyeshadow in Maharani Gold and Maharani Silver
Sari Glow Iridescent Blush in Maharani Pink and Maharani Orange
Magic Kajal Eye Pencil in Carbon Black
Rouge Interdit in Maharani Rose and Maharani Henna
Vernis Please! in Maharani Tangerine and Maharani Pink
Prismissime Visage in Maharani Pinks (Fair complexions) and Maharani Apricots (Darker/tanned complexions)

Make-up Trends: Soft Eyeliner

Don’t think that eyeliner has to be fierce—it can add just the right touch of glamour, as it did for Asin. Using white shimmer on the inner corners of the eye and a silvery-gray on the lid. Accentuate your eyes by adding a navy-black kohl eyeliner on the top and lined the rim of the inside.

Make sure you keep your eyeliner in your clutch because you will want to touch it up. You’ll want to re-trace the line near the inner corner, which can fade because of the proximity to eye moisture.

S/S '09 Make-up Trends: Manish Arora

Different face charts used by Vimi Joshi and M.A.C PRO Team

The unlikely inspiration behind Manish Arora's Spring Summer '09 collection—clowns, which he illustrated via a line-up of pieces largely inspired from circus costumes like voluminous jackets, clown pants, bra tops and bat-wing sleeves. M.A.C Senior Artist Vimi Joshi complimented the designer's creations with white skin offset by bold make-up.

"We wanted a very powerful look," said Arora backstage. "Something beautiful and glamorous, but with a twist!" Crystal masks were used to create a modern twist on the classic clown. "Edgy and trendy" is how Joshi described the look Arora desired. "The skin was kept white, using M.A.C Chromacake in Pure White and the focus was the center of the face."

Joshi painted the models' lids with neon pink (M.A.C Bright Fuchsia Pigment) or yellow pigment (M.A.C Primary Yellow Pigment) and extended it upward to the brow. She then concealed the eyebrows with foundation and pasted crystal or vinyl eyebrows for a theatrical effect. "The cheeks were rosy (M.A.C Posey Blushcreme) and the lips were magenta-red (M.A.C Mystic Lipstick)," explained Joshi. The lip color's satin formula was made darker and more matte with a layer of translucent powder between coats—and it was show time!

Make-up Trend: Milky Pink Lipstick

Don't let that milky pink throw you off. When done correctly like Sonam Kapoor, (the desi trend-setter), matte bubblegum pink makes you look flirty, girly and rocker-chic at the same time.

This shade is best worn as a lipstick, not a gloss. An intense milky, pink gloss can make you look like you used Pepto Bismol!

Make-up Trend: Brow Bone Highlighter

Got five seconds? Take a cue from Deepika Padukone by sweeping a shimmery champagne hue along the the lower edge of your brows. It makes your features look more chiseled by drawing light to your bone structure, and it makes smoky eyes look fresh by offsetting the darkness.

Light, shimmery shadow will draw attention to errant brow hairs, so be sure to pluck any strays before trying this technique.

Aishwarya's L'Oreal Eastern Beauty Breakdown

This breakdown, courtesy James Kaliardos

Aishwarya’s oriental beauty look was created by L’Oreal Paris using True Match Minerals in Creamy Beige N3 that evens out the complexion as impeccably as a foundation. She wears Color Appeal Trio Star Secrets in Babylon Gardens #329 combined with Mineral Kohl in Black #01. The final touch on her eyes is Volume Shocking Brush Exact Mascara in Black that lengthens and volumizes her lashes. Aishwarya’s look is completed by applying Glam Shine 6H Goldy Lip #002.

The products have different names in the U.S.:
True Match Minerals in Creamy Beige N3: Bare Naturale Mineral Foundation in Nude Beige
Color Appeal Trio Star Secrets in Babylon Gardens #329: Wear Infinite Eye Shadow Quad in Very Violet
Mineral Kohl in Black #01: Bare Naturale Gentle Minerale Eyeliner in Defining Onyx
Volume Shocking Brush Exact Mascara in Black: Volume Shocking Mascara in Blackest Black
Glam Shine 6H Goldy Lip #002: Glam Shine Lipcolor in Prima Donna

Make-up Trend: Pink, Flirty Make-up

"This look works best for anyone who wants something classic with a bit of girly simplicity," says make-up expert Cory Walia. "These rich pink hues brighten Sonam Kapoor's face. To get it right, cheeks, eyes, and lips should be balanced and even, so that one feature does not overpower another."

Cory suggests using a multi-tasking pinkish brownish cream that works for lips and cheeks, like Stila Convertible Color in Peony. Sweep a fingertip over the surface of the product, then dab and blend to apply color.

Make-up Bag Essentials

Now that winter is here, you're probably feeling like it's time to switch up your style a little. Good news: While you might have to rotate your closet to stay on trend, your makeup bag is basically all set. A lot of what you already have on hand (summer powder, your favorite gloss) can be used in new ways to create sexy, updated looks. The trick is to make your products work for you and follow make-up artists' tips.

Hotter Lips
- Turn old into new! Instead of buying all new lipsticks, layer your existing shades to create fun fall options. Combine brown and pink to make a sultry rose, red and purple for plum, and coral and red for fuchsia. - Make your red lipstick racier. Apply pressed powder in between coats to intensify your everyday red lipstick. "The powder pulls out the oil from the lipstick, so you're left with a deep, matte stain, which is exactly the kind of effect you want right now," says Vimi Joshi, M.A.C Senior Make-up Artist. Try: M.A.C Select Sheer/Pressed Powder. Outline your pucker with a brow pencil. To prevent your bold lip color from creeping past the corners, rim your mouth with a flesh-colored lip pencil, its waxy formula is great at preventing any smudging. Pat foundation over your lips. The nude, mod lip is the balance to this season's rich colors. You don't even need any lipstick to pull it off. Just dip a makeup sponge in foundation, press it to your lips, and let it dry for a few seconds. Finish it off with a clear lip gloss to add some shine, and you're good to go.
Rec: Dior Addict Ultra Gloss Reflect in Tulle or M.A.C Electroflash Cultureclash Lip Glass are great for this trick.

Fresh, Flawless Skin
Rub face primer on your body. The festive season is here, and so are the fabulous after-celebration parties. Dress your skin to the occasion! The pros smooth on regular makeup primer. "Primers contain light diffusers that even out and enhance your skin tone," explains Vimi. "So it's great to apply them anywhere you want to draw extra attention. She recommends M.A.C Prep + Prime Skin and Lancome La Base Pro Perfecting Make-up Primer.

Swirl cherry lip gloss on your cheeks. Dick Page, artistic director for Shiseido the Makeup, recommends using bright red gloss or balm on your apples to enhance your natural glow. "You can layer on more or less to get the exact level of rosiness that you want," he says. Try Shiseido Automatic Lip Crayon in LC7.

Trade bronzer for blush. To get the chiseled cheekbones from the catwalks, sweep bronzer (instead of powder blush) onto the hollows of the cheeks. "This creates shadows and depth so your cheekbones stand out more," says Mickey Contractor. Also, use a darker shade of powder that;s left over from summer. "Paint on your foundation. Models looked especially airbrushed on the fall runways. To get the look: Use a makeup brush to put on liquid foundation. "The bristles evenly distribute the product, so you get this soft veil of coverage," says Mickey. Mickey says he personally loves the M.A.C 187 Brush for that airbrushed and flawless look. When going over tricky areas (like under the eyes or around the nose), squeeze the tip to flatten the edge to smooth out lines. Every few days, remember to wash your brush with shampoo to remove foundation buildup.
Rec: M.A.C Matte Bronze Bronzing Powder

Instantly alluring eyes
Maximize your blush. Take a creamy rose blush, and apply it in a half moon shape under your brow bone and over the tops of your cheekbones. "You'll get a subtle sheen that draws attention to your eyes and makes your face glow," explains Cory Walia.
Rec: NARS The Multiple in Maui

"Tap lip gloss under your brows. Sounds crazy, but patting on a soft, shimmery pink gloss helps highlight and lift your eyes", says Cory. Use a nonsticky formula (so your lashes don't get stuck!), and blend in.
Rec: Stila Lip Glaze in Papaya

'Wear contrasting eyeshadow colors. It's a hot trend for fall, but just work with what you already have. Apply a bright, intense hue (like purple) on your upper lids, then drag a softer hue (pearly green) along your lower lash line", recommends Walia.
Recs: Tarte Eyeshadow in West Egg; Urban Decay Eyeshadow in Vert

Put bronzer on your lashes. Comb loose bronze powder through lashes instead of mascara. "You'll get a subtle sparkle that's so sexy for night since it catches the light," says Vimi. One swipe should do it - you don't want any excess flakes to fall under your eyes. Try M.A.C Pigment in Blue Brown.

Make-up Trend: Smooth Lips

If you have cracked or peeling lips, there’s no way to rock a fierce red lipstick like Mughda Godse. There's more to a kissable pout than swiping on a stick of lip balm in wintertime.

Check your ingredients! Cinnamon mints and gum can dry and irritate your lips. Also, some lipsticks contain a preservative, propyl gallate, that cause irritation on many people’s lips. Skip these irritants to keep lips looking silky smooth.

Make-up Trend: Glowing Winter Skin

No matter how good your makeup products are, they just won't sit well on skin that isn't well-hydrated. The cold, dry air this time of year really takes a toll on your skin, so you need hydrate hydrate hydrate, even if you have oily skin.

Before putting on your makeup, rub Kiehl's face moisturizer between your hand and press palms into your face for a few seconds. The warmth will help ingredients penetrate and foundation will look moist and dewy like Deepika Padukone's.

S/S '09 Make-up Trends: Siddharta Tyler

With a colourful catwalk collection inspired by the warrior woman, it was a safe bet that designer Siddartha Tytler wasn't going to let his models' faces sink into the background. Make-up artist Vimi Joshi described the effect as "a monochromatic, couture face," as she highlighted model Krishna Somani's face with a splash of vibrant blue around the eyes. "The nude lip and smoky eyes have been around for seasons; year-on-year make-up artists find new ways to put a different spin on it. What we now need is vivacious colour."

The 8 Commandments of Beauty

When I say the eight commandments of beauty I mean the stuff that we do other than putting on make-up on our faces. I'm talking about cleansing, toning, exfoliating, masking, make-up removal, moisturizing, sun protection, and anti-aging!

1. Cleansing
Face wash (or foam), or cleansing milk
Cleansing = a must. Mornings must start with face wash, nights must end with makeup remover. Exfoliation and masks you can live with on a weekly basis. While normal soap contains alkalies that stop skin from retaining moisture, face washes tend to be milder, with special properties such as oil-control and pore reducing elements.
HOW TO IDENTIFY THE ONE FOR YOU
Oily skin, Clean with a deep-cleansing wash: Lush Ultrabland Cleanser
Dry skin is best combated with a creamy cleanser: Everyuth Cream Face Wash
Combination skin, Wash away oil, not moisture: Clarins Pure Melt Cleansing Gel
Mature skin needs cleansing and moisturizing: Estée Lauder Soft Clean Tender Crème Cleanser

2. Makeup remover
Okay, so we've all had that day, when it feels like the five minutes it takes to get your makeup off are five minutes you just want to kick back and go to sleep. But not doing it can add lines to your face, because makeup clogs pores, causing both skin problems as well as make the skin looking dull.
Recs: M.A.C Gently Off Eye and Lip Makeup Remover, Clinique Take The Day Off Cleansing Milk

3. Firming
Toning is protective step post cleansing. Also referred to as clarifying lotions or softeners, toners balance the skin, and prepare it for better absorption of moisturizers. Use toner if you have oily or combination skin. Dry skins can do without one, but as a softener helps skin absorb moisturizer, you can use them even if you have dry skin.
Recs: Clinique Clarifying Lotion, Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Purifying Toner, Neutrogena Pore Refining Toner

4. Exfoliating
Dead skin cells need to be sloughed off if you want to show off fresh, glowing skin. Here, are the recommendations. Mechanical exfoliation is where dead skin cells are physically sloughed off with gentle abrasive substances that include walnuts, almonds, sea salt, fruit pits. Use one of these exfoliators twice weekly: Lush Ocean Salt Cleanser. Chemical Exfoliation is mostly performed at salons and falls into the category of chemical peels and microdermabrasion. Enzymes, alphahydroxy acids (AHAs) or betahydroxy acids (BHAS) loosen the glue-like substance that holds the cells together, allowing them to slough away. A good at-home pick: L'Oréal Paris Re-Finish Micro Dermabrasion Kit.

5. Mask
A mask exfoliates, draws out impurities, unclogs pores, and firms up your skin—in the time it takes you to watch one episode of Gossip Girl!
Oily and combination skin needs peel-off masks that remove impurities and tighten pores: Lush Mask of Magnaminty Cleanser. Dry skin needs a creme-based moisturizing mask: Lush Brazened Honey Detoxifying Face Mask, Clarins New Bright Plus HP Intensive Brightening Mask

6. Moisturizing
Whether oily, dry, combination, mature; if there's that you must follow, it's moisturize, moisturize! Cream, moisturizer or serum, when you sleep, the temperature of your skin rises a little. This lets skin absorb moisture better. Night creams, are, therefore formulated to be richer than day formulas.
Recs:
Estée Lauder Advanced Night Repair Complex, L'Oréal Paris White Perfect Triple Whitening Repairing Night Cream, Nivea Visage Regenerating Night Care Cream, Neutrogena Light Night Cream.
Hand Cream, Hands get a lot dryer than many other parts of the body, thanks to exposure to the elements as well as frequent contact with water. Hand creams, therefore, are always formulated to be more intensive in their moisturising abilities.
Recs
:
Lush Handy Gurugu Hand Cream, Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Hand Cream
Body Lotion
Your body needs moisture just the same as your face. The best time to moisturize is post-shower, and again at night, when the absorption of your skin is better.
Recs: the Body Shop Vitamin E Body Butter, Lush Enzymion Moisturizer, Clarins White Plus Brightening Body Veil SPF 20 pa++, Molton Brown Ultrasmooth Coco De Mer Body Lotion
Lip Balm

Lips have no sebaceous (oil) glands, no sweat glands, no hair, no skin pigment and are composed of very thin skin layers (3 to 5). Lip balms target this skin and kept it moist and well-hydrated. Recs: Clinique Super Balm Lip treatment, M.A.C Lip Conditioner, Molton Brown Wonder Lips Booster, Nivea Lip Care Essential.
Eye cream

Thinner than the rest of your facial skin, your eye area needs special care; that's where eye creams come in. Many skin creams contain AHAs, which help in exfoliation, but such products should never be applied around the eye area as they dry the skin, causing premature wrinkles. Eye creams are rich in oil and moisture, and target specific problems such as crow's feet, puffy eyes and dark under-eye circles.
Recs: M.A.C Moisturelush Eye Cream, Elizabeth Arden INTERVENE Eye Pause & Effect Moisture Eye Cream, Estee Lauder Resilience Lift Extreme, Clinique All About Eyes Rich.
Foot cream
The skin of your feet is different from that on the rest of your body; the sole is 15 times thicker than facial skin and thrice as thick as the skin of the palm. That's why a regular moisturizing lotion just won't cut it.
Recs: Avon FootWorks Triple Duty Cream, Burt's Bees Peppermint Foot Lotion

7. Sun Care!
One element that causes maximum skin damage is the sun. Sunscreen isn't a beauty indulgence, it's as much a necessity as water! No more sun!
Sunscreens and sunblocks
Now you already know that the higher the SPF (Sun Protection Factor), the more sunburn protection the product provides. But just applying sunscreen every morning won't do the trick--effectiveness of sunscreen is reduced if applied in inadequate quantities or washed off, rubbed off, sweated off, or otherwise removed. For maximum effectiveness, apply sunscreen liberally and reapply frequently. Remember that the sun's rays are the strongest from 10 AM to 4 PM, so minimize outdoor time if you can.
Recs:
Clinique City Block Sheer SPF 25, Elizabeth Arden Ceramide Plump Perfect Moisture Cream SPF 30, Nivea Body UV Protection Lotion, Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch Sun Block SPF 70

8. Anti -Aging
They say Prevention is the best cure, but with skin, at times, it's the only cure! You show disrespect to your skin and wham! You get fine lines. No SPF, welcome deep set wrinkles. Rough handling of skin, more lines come into play. But other than doing what all we advised you to, add anti-aging products to your skin regimen. Experts advise anti-aging to be included from your early 20s, before you can even see the first fine lines on your skin.
Recs: Clarins Super Restorative, Elizabeth Arden Prevage, Chanel Precision, Olay Total Effects.

Make-up Trend: Moisturized, Smooth Under-Eye Area

When it comes to the eye area, smooth skin like Bipasha Basu’s helps makeup, especially concealer, sit flawlessly.

Prepping the eyes can be done in a snap! Dab a Q-tip-filled serum from Hollywood Secrets and swipe it over or under makeup to instantly smooth and tighten the skin around the eyes.

S/S '09 Make-up Trends: Namrata Joshipura

Leave it to designer Namrata Joshipura to take a leaf from the winged smokey eye and come up with something funky. M.A.C Senior Artist Vimi Joshi updated the 'luxe-minimalist look infused with color and detail' without losing the reference, thanks to a clean complexion highlighted with metallic lids.

Joshi began by evening out the models' skin tone with foundation, covering up only where required, and a dusting of matte loose powder while lips were dabbed with gloss. She then created a metallic eye by boldly rimming eyes with M.A.C Tarnish Eye Kohl. Next, orange winged-out smokey eyes using M.A.C Eye Shadow in Orange extended out to the temples and onto the bridge of the nose.

Once the eye color was in place, Joshi brushed the top and bottom lashes with a generous amount of mascara and perfected brows with a pencil and clear setting gel. She then enhanced the cheekbones with a contouring and highlighting powder duo, and a slick of gloss on lips added a shiny finish.

Make-up Trend: Electric Blue Eye Liner

Bold eyes are back, so don’t be afraid of vibrant blues, plums and greens. Ash's look is perfect for someone who doesn't have much time to apply makeup. It's a quick and easy way to play up the eyes with a pop of color.

For a softer effect, apply eye shadow with a fine-point brush instead of using a pencil, which creates a more hard-edged line.

S/S '09 Make-up Trends: Rajesh Pratap Singh

Mickey Contractor began by pressing a few drops of primer into the skin to warm up the complexion. Next, he used M.A.C Select Moisture Cover, blended Cream Color Base in a triangular shape on the cheeks to create a natural flush, and dabbed sheer loose powder on the T-zone.

'Rajesh is known for his signature style which is nude make-up. This look was replicated from his Paris S/S '09 show, the key feature being the gloss around the eyes,' explained Mickey. He then applied M.A.C Cream Color Base in Pearl into the base into the crease of the lid, crimped the top lashes and coated them with mascara. A brow shader was applied lightly to the brows; the darker "brow" powder was used to add a soft tint of color that filled, defined, shaped and added polish and volume to the brow, while the highlight color of sheer fine pearl was used to add light highlights around the brow bone. A final slick of lip conditioner topped with gloss infused lips with a subtle sheen.

The hairstylists envisioned beautiful freshly washed hair that moved as the girls walked down the runway. To that end, they applied a volumizing treatment to damp hair and blew it dry while brushing it down with a round brush.

Mickey Contractor's Make-over

Mickey Contractor is a make-up artist to the stars on set and for big events like the Bollywood Oscars. A GMTV reporter went to meet him for a Bollywood make-over

He says it’s all about dramatic eyes and the make-up must be waterproof to survive the scenes in waterfalls, fountains and of course for the tears in Bollywood!

Mickey applies the finishing touches - She's not sure how this is going to turn out. "Will it be too dramatic, will I look like a Bollywood diva?"

Doesn't she look stunning?

S/S '09 Make-up Trends: Varun Bahl

An artful minimalist, Varun Bahl has specific ideas about runway beauty. "We used fresh day make-up which was very spring summer: a light brown eye shadow washed over the lids and a pink mouth," explained make-up artist Mickey Contractor.

The overall feeling of the collection was fresh and feminine, so the make-up the artist paired a clean, just-back-from-the-garden complexion with sheer brilliance on the lips and cheeks. A fresh-faced look demands perfectly clear skin, so Mickey began by evening tone and erasing imperfections with a primer, foundation and loose powder as needed. Next, he applied M.A.C Powder Blush in Mocha and blended it to create a sheer finish.

Smoky eyes are traditionally dark, but a heavy look would've seemed out of place against the models' berry cheeks. Mickey applied a highly pigmented shadow, using Cork for light skin and Saddle for dark skin, and finished the face with a smudge of raspberry-toned lip pencil.

S/S '09 Make-up Trends: Ranna Gill

Ranna Gill's Spring collection was a mix of iridescent kaftans, dresses and bathing suits embellished with precious stones, petit point embroideries and appliqué. Mickey Contractor unified the vivacious styles by "an extremely sensual and sexy look with a long liner and burgundy mouth."

Mickey riffed on Ranna Gill's look with boldly rimmed eyes, offset by M.A.C Eye Shadow in Saddle. A brush of mascara and the eye was complete. Bold, flirtatious eyes called for a natural complexion and deep lips. Mickey perfected the models' skin with primer and foundation for a matte, velvety texture, and a dusting of loose powder. A brush of Coppertone Blush was used to contour cheeks, while lips were highlighted with Spice.

Make-up Trend: Youthful, Girly Eyebrows

Fine lines and gray hair are well-known aging culprits. Add poorly shaped brows to that list! Karisma Kapoor has the definition of young, natural brows, but many women have that surprised look from over-arched brows. They're unflattering and can be incredibly aging.

Keep the width consistent across the entire brow: fill sparse sections in with a pencil and use a brow gel to keep unruly hairs in place.

Make-up Trend: Soft, Smoky Eyes

We all love the effect and look of a smoky eye, but sometimes it can be too heavy. Take a lesson from Priyanka Chopra, whose beautiful eyes had just enough smoky by using heavy brown shades instead of grays and blacks.

Brush a nude shadow from the lash line up past the crease and then lined the upper lashline with Lancome's Le Crayon Khol in Black Coffee and smudged the line. Set the entire lid with a cocoa-hued shadow and finished by rimming the lower inner line with the Khol pencil and a coat of Lancome's Oscillation mascara.
