Make-up Trend: Matte to Dewy Skin

Buh-bye high-shine makeup! Priyanka Chopra's skin looks ready for the transition from summer into fall with an ever-so-soft dewy finish on September's Vogue India issue.

Avoid the greasiness! Prep bare skin with an oil-absorbing makeup primer, which soaks up shine before it has a chance to affect cosmetics. After applying makeup, gently dab your T-zone with translucent powder. (Look for a finely milled formula, which looks natural, not dusty).

Make-up Trend: Shiny Nude Lips

Rani Mukherji finally came out of hiding, and was found in the buff this week at a book launch. Her beige glossy pucker played up her signature pouty lips without the "Look at me!" statement of an ultra-bright hue.

Looks can be deceiving when it comes to nude lip gloss. If you wear it on bare lips, the final shade will look muddy. Instead, diminish pinkish tones in your lips with a light coat of foundation before applying nude liner and gloss.

Make-up Trend: Rosy Cheeks

"We wanted Bipasha's makeup to be very soft and glowy to match her ultra-feminine white Blank dress," says celebrity makeup artist Satorii Pond. "She looked like a young girl who had just been running outside in the meadows."

The best trick to get photo-friendly shimmer that's not too high-shine? "Build shiny blush across the cheekbones up to the temples, sweeping only a light layer at a time with a fan brush," adds Satorii.

My views on the article and website
:

I think it's wonderful that India has its own M.A.C website. It was about time!! But, that being said, it launched on the 8th of August, and there are tons of features they lack. For instance there are no clickable links or product info whatsoever. Neither are they any tips or face charts the article talks about. I'm thinking that they are still adding features, so I guess we'll have to wait and watch how the site turns out!

M.A.C A/W 2008 Trend: La La Bollywood

On the runway at Manish Arora's Fall Collection

A more wearable version

At Manish Arora the speak-with-your-eyes glamour of Bollywood and the mannered demure of Paris couture fuse in eyes smoothly and fluidly articulated with a languorously flirtatious wisp of lash. The 5 essentials: Blacktrack Fluidline; Soot and Blanc Type Eye Shadows; No. 2 Lash; Duo Adhesive.

Make-up Trend: Silver Eyes

The Olympics have us obsessed with metals. And as Aishwarya Bachchan shows, you can definitely come in first with silver. The secret? A gradual transition from sheer white to smoky gray on your lids, with a silver lining on the inner edges.

Spread a thin layer of opalescent white cream shadow over your lids and then swipe it along your lower lash lines and the inner corners of your eyes. Next, lightly brush shimmery gray powder shadow from the outer corners to the middle of your lids. Run silver eye liner along the inner rims for extra glisten.

Make-up Trend: Tans All the Way into Fall

Nothing looks better than a glowing faux tan, seen here on Neha Dhupia. But unlike other objects of beauty, spray tans don't age gracefully. To get yours to last, take cool showers and blot (not wipe) yourself dry with a towel.

To prolong your tan, smooth a light body oil, like Neutrogena, over your body before you shower.

Sushmita's Beauty Secret

Would you like to know what beauty product Sushmita Sen swears by?? She discloses the properties of Olay Total Effects — which fights the seven signs of aging and keeps women looking young. She adds, "I don't swear by it only because I endorse the product, it really works in forming and tightening my skin." Does the Miss Universe ever have a bad skin day herself? “All women, young, old or midlife, have good and bad days, even me!” she says smiling.

For Sushmita, beauty is all about taking good care of one’s skin. “Being an actor I use a lot of makeup, face tons of harsh lights and outdoor activities. I’m impatient and couldn’t be bothered with layers of treatment for my skin. I’m lucky to have this ‘spa in a bottle’ which takes me just about five minutes,” she reveals.

The actress believes looking good isn’t everything, feeling good is. “I like to spend time with myself,” she explains. A staunch believer of ‘me time’, she adds, “Me time means a lot of musical silence, it’s a time of minimal talking or thinking. When I do absolutely nothing.” Busy with films like Dulha Mil Gaya, Do Not Disturb and her own production Jhansi Ki Rani Lakshmibai, how does Sushmita Sen squeeze ‘me time’ into her day? “I make time for it even if it's at 2 in the morning,” she admits. “Often, after a late night packup, the drive back home is my ‘me time’.”

Make-up Trend: Champagne Hued Eyes

Celebrity makeup artist Subhash Vaggal gave Lara Dutta a "simple, clean and chic" face for her photoshoot. "I was inspired by her top, which is white with gold sequins running down the front, so I wanted her makeup to reflect that as well."

"I used a light shimmery champagne shade all over her lids to brighten the area and make her eyes the focus. Then I accented her crease with a warm peachy-pink color and applied thick black liquid liner to pull the eyes up and out," says Subhash, then he applied a shimmery bronze powder on her decolletage and shoulders, he then finished the look with a sheer peach gloss on the lips.

Make-up Trend: Bright White Eyes

What do pollen, sad movies, airplanes and alcohol all have in common? They give us veiny, bloodshot eyes. While dark eye liner can partially reverse the effect by providing a stark color contrast, a small bottle of redness-relief eye drops instantly give you clear, bright, sparkling, youthful-looking eyes like Minissha Lamba.

Minty fresh for your eyes? Yep. Before a photo op, squeeze a drop of cooling eye drops, brighten the whites of your eyes and add a refreshing coolness to your gaze.

Skincare/Make-up Trend: Blemish Free Skin

Beautiful skin like Preity Zinta's starts with a few simple lifestyle changes. Always wash your face before bed and avoid high-sugar foods. Studies suggest increased insulin levels can increase oil gland activity.

If a pimple pops up before a big event, a combination of benzoyl peroxide and clindamycin cream used on the spot is a great zit zapper.

Make-up Trend: Barely There Make-up

"I wanted the makeup to reflect Minissha's beautiful and effortless dress," says makeup artist Subhash Vaggal, who created this neutral-toned look on Minissha Lamba. "We decided to keep the colors very soft and subtle with notes of cooler tones."

Subhash kept to the following neutral palette of products: Lancôme Tinted Moisturizer, Chanel Bronzing Powder, Golden Sand Dior eyeshadow and M.A.C Gel lipstick. He finished the look "with a light dusting of pearly white shimmer powder on the cheeks, eyelids, shoulders and legs to complement the cooler tones of the look."

Make-up Trend: Golden Smoky Eyes

Makeup artist Cory Walia wanted to use a little of what will be hot for fall in. "I did smoky eyes with a touch of metallic to pop this fall's earthy hues," he says. "And they looked great with Bipasha's brown eyes."

Cory applied a warm brown and a bronze-gold cream shadows to the entire eye. "I blended them onto the eyelid and around the entire eye into an almond shape," he says. "Then I went over with a glittery shadow. He finished the eyes with DiorShow mascara and a strip of faux lashes.

Make-up Trend: Summer's Smokey Eyes

On Marie Claire's cover, Bipasha Basu's make-up artist Subhash Vaggal showed us how to wear a lot of sexy black eye makeup without it looking too heavy for a hot summer night. The trick: Leave the rest of your face alone! Bips has on strong black liner, nude lip balm and what looks to be a little moisturizer (and no foundation), so her natural skin shows through. The eye intensity paired with the simplicity of a no-makeup face keeps the look fresh and summery.

Skin Care Talk with Ruheen Jaiswal

"I religiously follow the three-step process. I clean my face with Eve Lom's Cleansing Cream, tone with Dr. Hauschka's Facial Toner and moisturize with Dr. Brandt's Infinite Moisture or Dr. Brandt's Skincare 'C' Gel depending on what I feel my skin needs at that time... After a late night out, I treat my face to a super-hydrating mask like SK-II Facial Treatment Mask, which works miracles, or a Dermalogica Power Recovery Masque, which I call my 'ambulance in a tube.' If its a really late night, I use the Guerlain Issima Midnight Secret, which is like 'sleep in a bottle'"

Visiting IIFA 2008 with Senior M.A.C Artist Pornpichit

Back in June, I blogged about Pornpichit sharing some of his tips and tricks to look as good as the celebrities did at the IIFAs. Here he goes again sharing some more of his clipboard notes on the look him and Vimi decided for the IIFAs.

In preparation for the prestigious event, Senior Make-up Artist for M.A.C Cosmetics Pornpichit Khumnguen offers some tips and techniques for creating the Bollywood look.
"In the past, Indian actresses used to put on layers of foundation and powder with the result that they always looked over made up. Today, they prefer more of a natural look but one that still gives them full coverage and highlights their facial contours," he explains.
"A simple technique is to use M.A.C Coppertone Blush - for the contours then fill in with M.A.C Pink Swoon Blush for a rosy look," says Pornpichit

For the smoky eyes favored by the new generation of Bollywood celebrities, he advises playing with brown and gray, using plenty of M.A.C Blacktrack Fluidline and finishing off with M.A.C Plush Lash Mascara

If you're worried about smudges, the M.A.C 266 Small Angle Brush allows for easy application.
For a gorgeous pout, line the lips using M.A.C Plum and M.A.C Spice Lip Pencil then add some M.A.C Clear Lipglass

"The Indian Film industry is a strong guide to upcoming trends. The Bollywood look communicates a sophisticated oriental culture," Pornpichit notes.

    Make-up Trend: Layered Lip Colors

Kareena Kapoor has always been into black eyeliner, reveals makeup artist Mickey Contractor, who created this subtly smoldering look. To counterbalance her heavily-rimmed eyes, Mickey layered two lip colors (a dusty pink and a nude) to get a perfectly complementary shade of pink.

When layering lip products, start with the darker shade, then layer with the lighter or clear hue. Layering with a nude or beige shade is a good way to tone down a too-heavy lip color.

Make-up Trend: Girls will be Boys

A current rage, the look makes women look sexy in almost as-sexual way. It's all about wearing a thin white cotton men's shirt with sleeves rolled up, tails roughly tucked into mannish trousers!

Vimi Joshi, senior make-up artist for M.A.C Cosmetics says to go with the look follow these tips: "For girls, androgynous make-up is all about skin that is very matte in texture. Strong defined eyebrows should be groomed and shaped, giving them a sharper look, that are essential for this look. It's about highly bronzed skin and heavily kohl-ed."

Vimi on Faces being her Canvas

From the looks of it, had she tried she could have given the models a run for their money. Now she helps them get on the runway. Senior M.A.C make-up artist, Vimi Joshi would rather prefer dolling the models up than movie stars.
“Behind the scenes, is where the action takes place. Dressing up models is more fun because on the runway, you can be creative and more experimental. But when you are styling for movies, it is very character-oriented,” she asserted.
True, but that doesn’t hold her back to dress up movie stars. She has done the make-up for various Bollywood stars including the likes Deepika Padukone, Sonam Kapoor, Bipasha Basu, Katrina Kaif, Urmila, Mandira Bedi, Amisha Patel and Vidya Balan.
“Unlike, the grapevine, stars are one of the best people to work with. Most of them, come and hug me after the make-up is over, I think that is a sign of appreciation,” Vimi said.
But if there’s something she rues, is the lack of courage in actors to experiment with make-up.
“I hope that Indian actors could get a little more experimental because, they are the trend-setters of the country. Deepika Padukone’s eye make-up was heavily adopted by people. I had a lot of people who came to me and asked me for the Om Shanti Om eye-liner. The same case followed with Bipasha Basu’s extended eye-liner in Race,” Vimi informed.
Vimi adds that Indians should experiment with colors such as gray, purple, blue and greens.

“I would say that the top make-up artists in India always keep up with the international beauty trends. I had just returned from New York and the Milan fashion weeks. So I closely followed the international trends and adapted them to the Indian skin-tone while working for the Delhi Fashion Week,” the make-up artist said.

    Make-up Trend: Ethereal Eyes

For the look of this month's FHM Magazine that features Vidya Balan. Makeup artist Vidyadar wanted to make her eyes jump out and keep the rest of the face fresh, soft and glowy.

Vidyadar used icy pink eye shadow, plum eye liner, lots of mascara and cream blush to create this ethereal look. The lips were left bare.

    Mickey Contractor's Myth Busters

A common myth is foundation doesn't suit dusky or dark skin. M.A.C has come out with shades of in-between colors that have been formulated to suit Pakistani/Indian skin tones. And Mickey, who is the Director Of Makeup Artistry, India, for M.A.C Cosmetics, chipped in with his expertise to make that possible.

Myth 1: Applying foundation is an art few can master.
"Untrue," enthuses Mickey. "All it requires is some practice. If you have never used foundation before and have just purchased one, than I won't want you to wear it and step out on day one. I would instead suggest that you try on a few times at home until you are satisfied with the look it gives you."

Myth 2: Powder or liquid foundation can be used anytime of the day
That's true partially. "Foundation should give you a natural look. For beginners I suggest that they use powder foundation because it's easier to apply. M.A.C Studio Fix is an easy foundation to wear during the day and night, especially for working women who don't have time. Once you know how much powder suits your face, it will takes literally five minutes to buff it on, I recommend using the 182 Buffer Brush for it" he says. Reserve the liquid foundation for evening or night. And if you use liquid foundation use the 187 Duo Fibre Brush, and use Select Sheer/Loose Powder to set it," he informs.

Myth 3: Dusky or dark skin tone should use more foundation to lighten the skin tone.
Untrue. Mickey uses darker colored foundation on dusky skin tones and matches it with the neck color. He explains, "The first thing to do is to even out the facial skin tone. So firstly, use Select Cover-Up to hide the dark circles and a then a darker tone of Studio Fix to even out the color all over the face. The trick is to use it sparingly and at the same time make the face look smooth and even toned."

    Mickey says:

    Buy the right shade

Go to a make-up store and try out different foundation shades. Don't stick to just one shade just because someone suggested it's good. Ask the make-up artists to show you at least three different shades that work for you. Try on all three. Walk around the store with the foundation on for a while. This is because foundation oxidizes on some skin. If you think it's going darker, you have to counter balance it with the right color. So take time to choose the right one.

    Know your skin type
Oily skin: A powder base foundation works because that will keep the skin dry.
    Rec: M.A.C Studio Fix

Dry skin: Use a foundation with a slight emollient in it, which is a slightly oily texture. Dry skins tends to look a bit weather beaten with the foundation on so what you need to moisturize your skin really well before applying the foundation.
    Rec: M.A.C Full Coverage Foundation

Mixed skin: Check if you have a T-zone (which is the forehead and the nose). Don't use the moisturizer on that area but use it on the rest of the face which is dry. Then apply either powder or fluid foundation.
    Rec: M.A.C Studio Fix Fluid

Working women don't need foundation (at work)
Mickey Contractor feels that a working woman doesn't need anything more than a concealer. "Yes, if she wants to use a foundation, then go ahead. Though I would suggest that you keep the foundation for evening or night functions. A blush, lipstick, kohl and mascara and you are done," he says. If you like color on your face, you can use an eye shadow.

    A Desi Match

Every time Mickey Contractor, make-up artist to Bollywood stars and director of artistry, M.A.C India, made up a desi woman’s face, he had to mix two or more foundations for the perfect shade. It wasn’t a bother for him, but he sensed it might be for busy women. “When I worked directly with customers, I realized the need to suggest to M.A.C a few shades of concealers and foundations for Pakistani/Indian skin,” he says.

Every woman Contractor met was trying to find a quick fix. He also learned that most women didn’t want their foundation to show. “If the base is close to your natural skin color, it looks like almost nothing,” he says. He pitched to M.A.C the need for foundations and concealers with golden undertones. The result is four shades each of the brand’s Studio Fix Fluid, Studio Fix and Select Cover-Up.

Contractor explains that most desis have less pink and more ochre in their skin color, so shades with golden undertones are more suitable. Use his tips to find your match: “The ideal way to find a concealer is to try it on areas you need to conceal on your face, and not on the back of your wrist. If your problem is dark circles, then go with clean moisturized skin and try out various shades of concealers. The criteria should be to cover as much as possible without caking it up, and getting as close as possible to your own skin color. Foundation should match your neck so that you don’t have to wear body make-up.”
