Make-up Trend: Neon Pink Pout

It's impolite to call people names, but Bollywood is full of loud mouths. Stars like Shenaz Treasuryvala haven't uttered a controversial word, but they've made as bold a statement as any with creamy, nearly-neon fuchsia lipstick.

Get in line! With a shade this bright, precision is key. Carefully swipe on lip color with a stiff lip brush.

Vimi Joshi Speaks to M·A·C PRO

My name is Vimi Joshi and I am the Senior Makeup Artist for M·A·C in the Middle East and India. I have been doing makeup for 11 years now and never in my wildest dreams did I expect it to take me around the world and back to India and Bollywood.

I got into makeup accidentally while in medical school. Hanging out with some friends on music video sets in London I found myself watching the makeup artists; I was fascinated to see how they used color and texture to transform people. It was really inspirational. Virtually overnight, I knew that I had found my calling in life.

I gave up medical school and joined cosmetology school and for the first time was really excited about studying. Straight after graduating I went to work at MTV Europe for a few years; I also worked on numerous fashion shows, TV shows, music videos and did loads of editorials. It was a great experience and I got to work with some of the best talent in the industry.

I was then offered a job in Kuwait to work with the Royal Family and to open up a makeup concept store. I was meant to come out to the Middle East for three months...but eight years later I am still here and absolutely love it. I soon realized that "natural" makeup in the Middle East is heavy foundation, with dark, smoky, heavily lined eyes.

I certainly grew professionally and started doing theatrical "natural" makeup every day. I became the regional training manager for the Middle East for M·A·C and was soon offered a position in Dubai as the M·A·C Senior Makeup Artist for the Middle East and India.

I jumped at the chance. Growing up in England we watched Bollywood movies and now I had the chance to work in that glamorous industry. I have spent most of 2005 in India and it has been fascinating. There is a lot of emphasis on the eyes, which are heavily lined with lots of lashes and of course the lips are always beautifully defined. It is a very glamorous look which has inspired women all over the world. It is quite interesting to see that Arabian makeup is now very influential in terms of the runway. The cat's-eye "wing" look that is the trademark of Arabian women is now all over the fashion editorials and campaigns.

One of the biggest challenges we face as makeup artists here in the Middle East and India is the intense heat and humidity during summer months. Outdoor shooting for a Bollywood movie can be very difficult, as the makeup tends to melt very quickly. Bollywood actresses do have to wear a lot of makeup because film picks up every flaw. They traditionally apply foundation very heavily, but I have learned to minimize the foundation use, by prepping and priming the skin. I have discovered some incredible M·A·C products and techniques that will keep your makeup on much longer during these hot summer months.

The first step and most essential step to ensuring that your makeup stays on longer is the preparation of your skin before you apply any makeup at all. Make sure that your skin is thoroughly clean - Green Gel Cleanser is great for this. Before you apply any moisturizer use Fix + all over the face. Then massage any of our M·A·C moisturizers into your skin. If you have oily skin, then Oil Control Lotion is great as it keeps the skin oil-free for longer. Apply Fix + again to really hydrate the skin. This preparation is key as it really will hold your foundation in place.

To maintain your foundation during warmer climates, you need to ensure that you have some powder in your base. Powders absorb oils and will also make your skin matte. Studio Fix is great for oilier skin because it is a powder plus foundation. Studio Tech is a creamy compact that is great for all skins as it contains powder, water and emollient that will hydrate the skin and also keep it matte. Select SPF 15 Foundation is a liquid foundation for those who prefer liquid textures and can be used on all skin types. I would advise that you lightly powder your face after the foundation. Then, if you need to do some touch-ups during the day, Blot Powder and Blot Film are great to use as they contain no talc and will leave no residue on your face. You should also protect your skin with an SPF factor.

With that said, makeup for film actresses in Bollywood requires a very different technique so that the skin appears natural and flawless under the lights and the eye of the camera. Makeup for film is completely the opposite than makeup for fashion. To prevent the makeup from cracking under the intense heat of the lighting in the studio, it's important to use a layering technique. To prep the skin, do not use any moisturizer at all, wash the face with ice water. Apply Full Coverage Foundation all over the face, paying special attention to the area under the eyes. A yellow undertone or concealer is advisable under the eye area. Blend this into the skin to make it look as flawless as possible. Then scrape some Studio Fix onto a plate and mix it with water, preferably with ice water creating a "wash". Brush the wash all over the face using the 190 Foundation Brush, and again pay extra attention the under eye area. Using a sponge, absorb the excess water. This will then "set" your foundation for the day. It's amazing how it will not move! You will have to re-do the area under eye after every few hours using the same techniques. But, when you view the makeup through the eye of the camera, the actress will appear as if she's wearing no makeup at all - giving the illusion of perfect, even-toned skin.

There are some incredible products for eyes that have great staying power: Fluidlines and Paints are excellent to use as eye shadow. They start off as a cream and will set to powder. I have used them during the rainy season in India and on outdoor shoots and they did not move. We also have a great range of colors. Splashproof Lash Mascara and our Powerpoint Eye Pencils, which are waterproof as well, stand the test of time. In Bollywood movies, there are lots of scenes under waterfalls and lots of crying as well. Obviously, waterproof makeup is vital! This will stop the foundation from melting and streaking. Reapplying the foundation for a Bollywood film can take up to an hour.

M·A·C has some of the most amazing products for lips when it comes to warmer climates. Pro Longwear Lipcolour is highly pigmented and will stay on forever without drying out your lips, if used correctly. You need to make sure that you do not use a lip liner under the product and once you apply it you have to let it set for two minutes before you can add the gloss. Then line the outside of your lips. It works so well. You can also use our Matte Lipsticks, which are great, too.

Working in both fashion and films has been a great experience for me. I've learned so many vital techniques for makeup application and continue to use them everyday in my work. Every new job teaches me something new. Never stop learning!

Make-up Trend: Smoky Gunmetal Eyes

Want the drama of smoky eyes minus the smoke? Take a hint from Lara Dutta, who magnified the sexiness of her stare with gunmetal gray. By adding depth to her crease, she made her eyes pop without heavy eye makeup.

Rim eyes with black kohl liner, which easily blends into gray eye shadow. Next, dust a silver hue over lids. Then, sweep a deeper gunmetal gray shadow into your crease using a back-and-forth windshield wiper motion.

Make-up Trend: Hot Coral Lips

Goof-proof nudes are universal makeup shades, but rarely does a bright come along that suits everyone. Bright coral lips are the one-size-fits-all of this season's makeup trends. So whether you have dark skin or light skin, grab a deep peach or orange-red and satisfy your coral fix!

Whiten up! Make sure your teeth are pearl-like, because the yellow-based tones in coral can enhance yellow stains.

Make-up Trend: Glossy Red Lips

Asin Thottumkal gave us something to talk about on the Vogue India cover this month. In a throwback to '40s glamour, she paired a ruffled Lanvin dress with glossy red lipstick.

Red lipstick is bold enough to make a statement without shine, which can look gaudy. Asin found a happy medium by going for sheer color and subtle shine.

Make-up Trend: Lustrous Skin

Everyone wants her moment to shine—but when it comes to red-carpet shimmer, moderation is key. You don't want to be afraid to hug someone and have sparkles rub off on them, instead go for a more subtle approach like Perizaad. You want to look like you just walked off a plane from Cannes.

Body shimmer is a great way to get a quick glow but make sure you blend it! Even out streaky formulas by dabbing skin with a bare powder puff.

A Day in The Life of M.A.C Senior Artist Vimi Joshi

Backstage buzz, models and performers scrambling to get ready, make-up artists working at a frenetic pace, TV crews streaming in and out, and tables spilling over with bottles, jars and brushes. Hina Oomer-Ahmed experiences a day in the life of Vimi Joshi, senior make-up artist for M.A.C cosmetics at the recent IIFA awards in Bangkok

At 6 pm, the night of the IIFA Fashion extravaganza, Dubai-based senior make-up artiste, Vimi Joshi’s day has barely just begun. A bundle of high-voltage energy, the reporter asked her how she manages to keep on her feet for so many hours and still look like she could go on for another day. “Pure adrenaline” she answers. M.A.C was the official make-up sponsor of the recently held International Indian Film Academy Awards (IIFA) in Bangkok, and heading this endeavor is no easy job, but Vimi manages to make it look effortless, like it’s all in a day’s work. For the IIFA, she leads an entire team of more than 20 talented make-up artists who have come together from all over the world. The models are still doing technical rehearsals, which means less time for Vimi and the team to get more than 30 models flawlessly made up and ready to hit the ramp. But the team is well briefed and prepared for all the chaos. In the end, all the planning of the previous weeks pays off.
However, the real challenge is the day of the IIFA awards where M.A.C does the make-up for Shiamak Davar’s dance troupe which is going to play an integral part in all the performances. Vimi’s team has to create exclusive backstage make-up for 35 performers and 40 presenters at the IIFA Award ceremony to be held at Siam Niramit. Vimi has a long list of award show credentials and is adept at balancing several inputs at once. Her skills are put to good test as she runs out of interview time and we only get to really talk in the van on the way to the event venue. To add to the madness, she needs to run back to the Dusit Thani Hotel in an hour as Deepika Padukone insists that only Vimi do her make up for the big show.
In the few minutes we have to chat, Vimi and I talk about M.A.C’s presence in India, her experiences working with Indian celebrities and the wonders of M.A.C Studio Fix (a powder-based concealer that can cover up virtually anything).
An avid watcher of make-up trends and preferences in India, Vimi notices that, “of late, Indian women have been opening up to doing make-up more natural as opposed to layered and pancake like. They are also agreeable to using softer shades in lip and eye color.”

Recently, Vimi has been working with many young Bollywood stars. “Much of the younger actresses are experimenting with their looks. Sonam Kapoor and I worked closely to come up with a fresh look for her and the feedback she got for it was incredible.”
How is working in the Indian industry different from working in any other part if the world? “Even though I was fully trained, I had to adapt myself to the climactic conditions and learn new ways to make make-up look good in the heat and humidity,” says Vimi.

“In India, we are also working very hard to create awareness about the importance of skincare, the use of moisturizers and the right products to keep the skin hydrated. Mickey Contractor and I have created two foundation shades especially formulated for Indian skin.” As we reach the venue for the big show, Vimi is back to being the ringleader and getting her team ready for the busy evening ahead. She leaves me with the same first and last impression of her – a bundle of boundless energy.

Make-up Trend: Volumized Gorgeous Lips

Does it really hurt to be beautiful? Not if you take a tip from Vidya Balan, who maximized the fullness of her pout, minus the sting of lip plumper (that works by irritating lip skin with hot pepper extracts).

Vidya contoured her lips the same way you'd contour your cheeks. Line lips with a fine-point pencil a shade darker than your lips' natural color. Fill in the corners of your upper and lower lips, which makes them recede into the background to create dimension. Then apply a generous coat of shiny lip gloss one shade lighter than your natural lip color on the center of your lips, which attracts light and accentuates the fullness and "kissability" of your pucker.

Mita Avatramani for Clarins Shares Her 5 Step Skincare Routine

Mita, a national training manager with international skincare brand Clarins, shares some of her secrets to the perfect skin.
  • Our skin has seven layers. The outer layer of the skin is dead, so any skin problem needs to be addressed at the inner level.

  • Assuming your skin type to be oily / dry / normal may land you in trouble. There can be a million types of combination skin. Therefore, get your skin type checked and confirmed by a specialist before you shop for products.

  • With age, the rejuvenation process of the skin slows down, therefore, you want better skin 10 years down the line, start working towards it right now.

  • Moisturizing is NOT nourishing the skin with essence. It is only about forming a protective layer on the skin, which would keep the moisture locked in.

  • Skincare doesn't translate to only the face. "A very well-known actress in her 50s has maintained a fabulous face - tight, supple skin and clear complexion. Unfortunately, her hands - darkened, with lines and loose skin - give away her age! Please include your hands and neck in the skin care routine too!" Mita says.

  • Any nutrient in the body, including water, will reach your skin the last. But any damage to your body will first show on your skin. That's why getting all nutrients isn't all - getting them in enough quantities to reach your skin is important.
Step 1: Lifestyle changes
"The key to healthy skin is a healthy lifestyle" is Mita's mantra.
"Pollution and oily food are known culprits, but have you ever thought about electromagnetic waves? The waves that our mobiles catch can penetrate heaviest walls to reach us - shouldn't they also be affecting our skin?" Mita asks.
Mita, then, lists some simple changes in lifestyle that will go a long way for gorgeous skin:
  1. More water: Think you drink enough? Get this - one cup of Indian tea (brewed with milk and sugar) drains up to six glasses of water from your body. More water for alcohol and spicy food. Add to this the water drained by sweat and urine. There is almost none left in your body to keep your skin hydrated.

  2. 'Proper' sleep: Your skin heals itself while you sleep, so at least six hours of uninterrupted sleep is a must. "But remember, sleeping with your face pressed against the pillow or in an awkward position where your facial muscles are tugged and pulled is like inviting wrinkles and lines with a door open wide!" Mita says.

  3. NO frowns: Stress may makes it impossible, but try you must. Next time you furl those eyebrows together, imagine yourself looking like 50 at the age of 30.

  4. Correct digestion: Get your internal system on track to get the external glow. "Digestive problems spell an end to glorious skin, so get that on track," says Mita.
Step 2: Eyes
"Eyes are the most delicate organ in your body. Unfortunately the skin around eyes is even more delicate! The rules that apply to your face don't apply to under eye area," says Mita.
Problem: Puffiness under her eyes and early signs of dark circles.
Mita's solution:
  • Green tea helps to revitalize your under eye area.

  • No harsh products for the under eye area. Apply a specially formulated under eye revitalizing eye contour gel every night like Clarins Eye Contour Gel.

  • NEVER forget to take off the eye make-up - NOT with harsh soap or exfoliater, but with gentle cleansing products.
    Rec: Clarins Cleansing Milk
Step 3: T-zone
Problem: T zone is oily, which is a specific problem for women with combination skin. Sometimes, the pores in her T zone are blocked, leading to blackheads. Also, forehead is developing worry lines, giving way to premature aging.
Mita's solution:
  • Toning the skin of the T zone should help with the blackheads - a proper toner helps minimize the pores.
    Rec: Clarins Toning Lotion

  • Use products specially formulated for cleansing oily skin for the T zone, but not for the face, since it will dry up your cheeks.

  • Gentle exfoliation with a peel is a must - while it may be tempting to use any grainy powder as a scrub , it is totally wrong. Since the particles in these exfoliants are not consistent, they harm the skin more than help it. Instead of these, a simple peel mask may be more effective.
Rec: Clarins Truly Matte Pure and Radiant Mask

  • As for the lines on the forehead, apply and replenish the hydrating tightening gel every time you wash or cleanse your face. Aloe vera pulp might help as well.
Rec: Clarins HydraQuench Cooling Cream-Gel For Normal To Combination Skin
Step 4: Cheeks
Problem: Your complexion is smooth and problem-free. "All you need to do is maintain the complexion," says Mita.
Mita's solution:
  • Pollution and stress take away important nutrients from the skin. These need to be replenished with a nourishing cream, that can reach inside the skin and work there. Remember - these nourishing creams are not a substitute for a moisturizer.
Rec: Clarins Bright Plus HP Repairing Brightening Night Cream

  • Never use an alcohol-based toner - "in fact, everyone should ban alcohol-based toner, because it is too harsh on any skin and leaves it dry and protection-less," says Mita.
Rec: Clarins Toning Lotion - Dry/Normal Skin

  • NEVER rub or pull your skin while applying products. "Women tend to rub a cream in or pull and tug the skin while cleaning. That, over a lifetime is too much damage!" Mita says.

  • The BEST way to apply any product is "in light pressing movements from inwards to outwards."
Step 5: Neck and hands
Problem: The neck and hands are also relatively problem-free, with an occasional pimple that pops up.
Mita's solution:

Gorgeous Eyes and Brows with Cory Walia

Ace make up artist Cory Walia shares his right makeup tricks to gorgeous eyes and brows.

Eyes Wise
Bipasha Basu
  • Almond shaped eyes:
Use a black eyeliner on the upper eyelid and a kajal pencil to line the inside of the lower eyelid. This gives a beautiful definition to the eyes.
Rec: M.A.C Eye Kohl in Smolder

    Lara Dutta
  • Deep set & small eyes
Always use a thin eyeliner on small or deep set eyes, under the lower lashes. Shimmery textures and light color eye shadows bring out deep set eyes. A white pencil subtly used inside the lower lid opens up the eyes. Dark colors and matte textures make eyes look bigger. Deep-set eyes can be underplayed by using a bit of a dark shade in the inner corner of the eye. For small eyes with thick lashes, apply loads of mascara. You can even glam up in the evening by using stick-on lash extensions. Liquid eyeliner gives a good finish but requires a steady hand.

Shapely Brows
  • Shape Ace:
Arched eyebrows give attitude and sophistication to a face. The arch can be redefined with an eyebrow filler in brown or brownish black.

  • Trim Edge:
Sparse eyebrows can be filled with the same type of eyebrow filler in brown or brownish black.
Rec: M.A.C Brow Finisher in Wheat

  • Thick Trick:
Dense eyebrows can be made to look shapelier with the help of plucking and threading. Or use a lighter shade of hair color to lift the color of thick eyebrows.
  • Whether the eyebrows are thin, thick or full, they should always be impeccably shaped and stray-hair free

  • If blessed with shapely eyebrows, then tend to them by constantly brushing with a bit of transparent mascara or gel.

Make-up Trend: Cat Eyes

Saawariya's superstar Sonam Kapoor (say it fast 5 times, haha!) created a frenzy with this photo shoot. She transformed her round brown eyes into exotic lookers with a simple upward flick of the eye pencil. Rim eyes with a shiny gunmetal gray liner, creating a thicker line along upper lashines. About a centimeter from the outer corners, draw a sharp upward diagonal tail, which creates the illusion of almond-shaped cat eyes.

Call in the clean-up crew! If you get a smudge, no need to start all over. Dip a Q-tip in moisturizer and gently roll it across the goofed area to pick up the formula.

Make-up Trend: Shimmer Shadows

This shimmery copper look is a great alternative to a heavy smoky eye. It's more modern and looks fresher and lighter, especially with a tan.

Shimmer can get messy if the particles fall off your brush, wet your shadow brush to apply powdery shadow. Clean up any fallen particles with a Q-tip dipped in moisturizer.

Make-up Trend: Golden Highlighter

Our makeup sparkled in the '70s, glittered in the '80s and gleamed in the '90s. But today, the finest-milled shine particles impart an ever-so-subtle sheen that leaves skin with a touch of iridescent shimmer, like the gorgeous Ms. Kaif displays it.

If you have fair skin, golden peachy powders give your face a tint of sun without the bold, brown effect of bronzer.

Kareena's all for jewel tones. To compliment her green eyes, she wore a sheer wash of iridescent lime on her lids. This shade sparkled and gleamed, adding extra pizazz to her face and eyes.

The darker your skin, the more pigment you need to see a color. M.A.C and NARS' eye shadows have high levels of color pigment. If you have fair skin, try brands like Shu Uemura or Neutrogena for sheers (they can be layered for more intense color).
