Experts Weigh in on Summer 08's Make-up Trends

Makeup is a virtue when correctly used, otherwise it can lead to a range of skin problems that could include dryness, blotchiness and premature aging of the skin. We asked skin experts to help you make the best use of your traincase without compromising on the health of your skin.

Fresh, healthy skin is a prerequisite to any makeup regime. To achieve this, a number of measures must be undertaken on a regular basis. Meeta Awatramani, Training Manager of Clarins India, agrees, “It is important to prepare your skin for makeup or it can lead to issues such as foundation buildup.” She also emphasizes that moisturizing is key, as is starting your regime with clean skin that has no free radicals.
Meeta recommends: Clarins HydraQuench Cream

Even as makeup and skincare have benefited from the advent of new and beneficial technology, the adage of “cleanse-tone-moisturize” still holds true, but with a slight difference. Nancy Woo, Regional Training Director, Shiseido, tells us how, “Instead of a toner, use a softener that provides the first layer of hydration before you actually use a moisturizer.” She also emphasizes on the fact that every woman must find the time to go for a professional facial at least once a month.
Nancy recommends: Shiseido The Skincare Hydro Nourishing Softener

Ideally, makeup must enhance your best features and diminish your flaws. However, certain other factors come into play as far as the application of makeup is concerned. Even as one is tempted to buy into every new trend in the market, it is important to put your skin before the trends. “Go for makeup that also has skincare benefits,” Nancy advises. Cream or emulsion foundation is kind to the skin and grants a smooth finish. When it comes to summer, a foundation that has an SPF of at least 30 is desirable.
Nancy recommends: Shiseido Extra Smooth Sun Protection Lotion SPF 33 PA++

But as far as trends go this season, it’s all about experimentation. It heralds the return of a vintage-meets-fun 70s look. “Contrasting colors are in, as well as bright, effervescent tones,” she says. Vimi Joshi, Senior Artist, M.A.C speaks of a new trend, “Try using a kohl pencil in deep blue instead of black for a stunning effect.”
Vimi recommends: M.A.C Eye Kohl in Blooz

After a long day of work, or an endless night of partying, many women tend to hit the sack without removing their makeup. Nancy sounds the warning bell, “Women in their twenties are under a lot of stress—they’re at the beginning of their careers and lead a hectic life. It is important for them to correctly remove their makeup and also continually boost the vitality of their skin.”
Nancy recommends: Shiseido Pureness Refreshing Cleansing Sheets Oil-Free Alcohol-Free

Since the skin surrounding the eyes is more delicate, it is important to use a remover that is specifically designed for eye makeup.” She also advises using a serum or essence overnight. Vimi stresses on hydration, “If you spritz your face regularly, then just a hint of concealer and lip gloss can make you appear flawless.” Thus, the correct usage and skillful application of makeup can not only lend to a more beautiful appearance but also leave your skin glowing and healthy. So if you remember to follow the simple rules of preparation, application and removal, your skin will thank you for years to come.
Vimi recommends: M.A.C Fix +, M.A.C Select Moisturecover, M.A.C Tinted Lipglass

Color Palettes for the season

It's all about the eyes this season
Those with deep set eyes should opt for vibrant colors or shimmery pinks and peaches (M.A.C Eye Shadows in Da Bling, Samoa Silk, Passionate) . If you have small eyes, enhance them with greens and golds adding a darker color at the crease to create the illusion of bigger eyes (M.A.C Eye Shadows in Humid, Goldmine, Gorgeous Gold). The light complexioned can lightly line their eyes with a light pink eye pencil for a fresh, wide-eyed look. (M.A.C Dual Edge Eye Pencil in Nighthawk/Frontrow)

Make-up Trend: Hot Pink

Non-matchy pink shadow and hot pink lip gloss, with gold shadow on eyes' inner corners. This really opens the eyes and really pinks flatter all skin tones, and anyone can pull them off.

Make-up Trend: Matte Skin

When it comes to a shiny T-zone, powder is a girl's best friend. But during the dog days of summer, humidity can turn any makeup sticky in minutes. Get matte skin like Vidya Malwade by soaking up oil on the surface of your skin with blotting sheets.

Dab, don't drag! To keep your makeup in place (who wants blush on their chin?), press oil-absorbing sheets onto the surface of your face and pull up.

Vogue India Speaks to Vimi Joshi

Vimi Joshi, senior make-up artist, M.A.C Middle East and India shares summer make-up trends, the art of adapting runway make-up into your personal style, and contouring techniques.

On Summer Trends
Trends like beautifully contoured skin, gray smoky eyes, colorful eyes and lips, lighting and brightening make-up and fleshy metallic tones look great on desi women. This season is all about playing with textures and colors. Orange is a huge color for next season and it looks fabulous on Indian skin tones!
Vimi recommends: M.A.C Smut Eye Shadow, M.A.C Rule Eye Shadow

On adapting trends from runway to everyday
The best way to use runway trends in your make-up regime is to take elements of the make-up you really like and adapt it into your own personal style. You could admire a strong smoky eyes look with a red lip during the shows, but you can simply take the smoky eyes aspect of the look and add a pink glossy lip to it instead; or you could just go for the strong red lip.
Vimi recommends: M.A.C Lipstick in Russian Red, M.A.C Lipglass in Viva Glam VI SE

On the right technique to contour
The best way to contour is to go with a foundation shade that is two shades darker than your skin tone. You can start by contouring in your cheek bones and then blending in the same shade of foundation around your jaw line, temples and into your hair line. This will frame your face and add dimension to your skin.

Shah Jahan’s beloved Arjumand Banu Begum alias Mumtaz Mahal inspired the iconic Taj Mahal and was arguably the most beautiful queen of the Mughal era. Jodhaa Bai: Soft Enchantress

Moisturizer: M.A.C Studio Moisture Fix SPF 15 Lotion

Make-up Trend: Eyelash Stains

Think the only way to get lash definition is with thick coats of lengthening, plumping, intensifying formulas? Not so much. For a subtle daytime enhancement, turn to a low-drama lash tint—a liquid product that goes on like mascara and darkens lashes, but doesn't clump or smudge, so it gives a more natural look.

Karisma Kapoor amps up her light lashes with a dark tint; if your lashes are naturally dark, you can achieve the same effect as a tint by using a clear mascara.

Make-up Trend: Gold Eye Shadow

Bollywood's glitziest accessories aren't found at Amrapali or Jaisalmer. Stars like Lara Dutta are foregoing the real stuff for 24-carat bling on their lids, cheeks, lips everywhere1

Metallic shadows look most natural in cream formulation. Go for brown liner when you're planning to wear gold shadow—they're part of the same color family and blend together more seamlessly.

Make-up Trend: Peach Lipstick

There's nothing sexier than warming up a suntan with a coat of fresh, peach lipstick. Olive-skin beauties like Bipasha Basu look best with coral tones, while fair-skin lovelies should go with pinkier hues.

Illuminate your face with a soft shimmery coral blush to complement the tone of your lips.

Make-up Trend: Brow Lift

Using a pale highlighter along the entire base of the brow gives you an instant brow lift. It really opens and brightens the eyes.

Like Katrina Kaif, use a pale pink or beige shade instead of white, which can look chalky. Drag the pencil under each brow and lightly blend with a finger.

IIFA 2008: Pornpichit Khumnguen, M.A.C Senior Artist Shares the Bollywood Look This Year

M.A.C senior artist Pornpichit Khumnguen has noted changes on the green carpet, saying that young Indian stars may not follow the old school style of bold and beautiful Bollywood make-up.

"With the traditional make-up style, the complexion was very matte we used M.A.C Full Coverage Foundation, to the point that it looked powdery," he says. "The eyes were intensely defined with black and dark gray smoky eye make-up, we used M.A.C Carbon Eye Shadow and M.A.C Clue Eye Shadow and longer-than-normal brows were very much a trademark, for the brows we used M.A.C Brow Shader. Lips were also sharply defined and matte with a rich color lipstick, our favorites were M.A.C Mattene Lipsticks."

Today's Indian celebs might instead go for a more natural look, with a glowing complexion, alluring brown or light-gray smoky eyes, as well as glossy lips, we love M.A.C Tinted Lipglasses. Pornpichit, however, makes it clear that Indian ladies still believe in contouring and highlighting to emphasize facial features and bone structure, for that we used M.A.C Sculpt and Shape Powder. One beauty technique is to use different shades of M.A.C Studio Stick Foundation on different parts of the face - like cheeks and jawline - to provide a contouring effect.

"Contouring and highlighting give the face a deeper dimension and a photogenic advantage," says the Thai make-up artist, who will be busy backstage during this year's IIFA. M.A.C has been the official make-up sponsor of the IIFA since its first awards spectacular and its team of make-up artists has been behind the beautiful faces of Bipasha Basu, Vidya Balan and Sonam Kapoor.

Can Thai gals achieve the Bollywood look and brush shoulders with these stars? Pornpichit thinks so.

"It wouldn't require an extreme makeover to achieve the facial frame of Indians. But I think Thais can follow the Bollywood look very well by going for brown smoky eyes, dashed with black eyeliner, followed by a coat of black mascara. And to contrast the stunning eye make-up, use nude tones on lips."

"The Bollywood look is especially applicable to Thais with dark complexions," adds Pornpichit.

One common concern among many Thai and Indian ladies is darkening at the borders of the lips. Pornpichit's advice is instead of foundation, use M.A.C Spice Lip Pencil to shade the lips and even out the color before putting on lipstick. And a trick for a sexy pout is to put more lip gloss on the lower lip and leave one drop in the middle of both upper and lower lips to catch the spotlight.

LFW Part 6: Make-up Artists Tell Us How To Achieve Runway Looks

Arshiya Fakih

To complement Arshiya Fakih's modern silhouettes with Indian aesthetics, Cory Walia kept the look classic with a contemporary edge. "If the make-up and hair is loud, it shadows the collection as the attention is drawn away from the clothes," he explains. Here's how you can achieve the look:

Make-up Trend: Halfsie Eye Liner

In an ideal world, we all seamlessly finish what we start. Well, we're off the hook when it comes to eye liner. By framing her eye with a thick black line on just the outer half of each eye, Celina Jaitley achieved a fresh-yet-exotic look.

To avoid a stark line of demarcation, start the line under each pupil using a freshly-sharpened pencil.

Preliminary Images of Lancome's The Beauty of India Collection

I am totally digging the golden elephant highlighter. What about you guys?

Source: Ameblo

Make-up Trend: Sheer Foundation

This is the season to keep foundation fresh and light, like Mandira Bedi did. Instead of layering on full-coverage foundation, opt for tinted moisturizer. It will even out the color and texture of your face, while still showing off natural characteristics like freckles.

Create your own sheer summertime foundation. Moisten a makeup sponge until it expands, then squeeze out 95 percent of the moisture. Mix foundation and SPF face lotion on the back of your hand and lightly tap it into your skin with the sponge.

LFW Part 3: Make-up Artists Tell Us How To Achieve Runway Looks

Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna

"A strong look" is how stylist Yatan described the effect Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna desired. To him, the new glamour translated into smoky eyes and crimson lips. Here's how you can copy the look:

Make-up Trend: Faded Eye Liner

"Subtle drama" is the new rage in the beauty world. As Aishwarya showed at a recent photoshoot, blending out the edge of a severe cat eye produces a subtle-yet-sexy effect.

Using a creamy eye pencil, draw along your upper lashlines and blend the outer edge of the line a quarter-inch in an upward diagonal direction. Retrace along your lashline to create a more defined line.
