Verve's February Make-up Trends

DISCO DOLL
The Afro hair and metallic eyes recall the oomphy Diana Ross. The funky late 70s look is for a woman who wears her attitude on her sleeve.
BELLE OF THE BALL
The 70s version of smoky eyes created with blue shadow around the eyes and shimmery pink lips is a foolproof head-turner. Think Joan Collins in Esther and the King.

2008's Make-up Trends and New Collections

The Natural Look
Less is more and makeup is ever moving in the more natural, less pancake-ish direction. Word on the street is that the year will see more finishing products that enhance natural beauty -- nude, subtle tones rather than the heavy-baked tanned look that was 'in' back in 2007.
Make sure your skin is in peak condition -- moisturise regularly, especially before applying foundation and makeup to your face. Remember, even the best cosmetic products in the world can't compete with a glowing complexion.
Rec: M.A.C N Collection and Bobbi Brown Nude Collection

Matching Palette
Match your eye shadow to your lipstick, contrast is out. Matching shades will give you a polished, uniform look. The pink eye shadow you see in the photograph is set off wonderfully by the raspberry pink shade of lipstick.
Rec: Bobbi Brown 'Pink Raspberry' Collection

Matte Skin
While shiny foundation and body glitter were all the rage a while ago, the look for the new year dictates a more refined matte finish, as far as your face and skin are concerned.Keep things subtle and classy, even for a night on the town -- glossy lipstick and striking eyeshadow will look more tasteful and less overdone on a matte foundation.
Rec: Shu Uemura Foundation SPF20 Collection

Bronzey Eyes
It's all about warm, earthy tones here -- we're talking bold, shimmering browns and deep shining gold to highlight your eyes! Ditch the light pink and baby blue eye shadow shades for some real color to compliment your face. Gloss your lips with a shimmering nude to go with your eye shadow.
Rec: Lancôme L.U.C.I Collection

Smokey Cat Eyes
The smokey eye effect is still going strong as far as makeup trends go -- from clouded black to silvery gray to the dark navy shade you see here, the choice is yours. Smokey eye makeup effectively involves smudging your eyeliner. Spring '08 brings a new twist, elongate it, and define it to formulate a gorgeous smokey cat eye working the right shade of eye shadow and being creative.
Rec: Chanel Spring French Accents Collection

Cherry Hued Lips
If you plan to go easy on the eye makeup and go with kohl rimmed eyes, cherry hued pink-red lips are hot, hot, hot! Choose a shade that compliments your skin tone and gloss it up as much as you like, because the color should be tame but alluring.

M.U.A Cory Walia Talks About His Eye Make-up Favorites

Make up artist Cory Walia lets us in on his favorite make up:
Eyeliners

Cory's Tip - Metallic colors are really hot these days. Use the ones by M.A.C and Lakme and go wild with color.

To Shadow your Eyes

What Cory looks for:
"Good eye shadows are those whose color is rich and texture smooth. Some eye shadows look very attractive in their packages but when you use them the powder is dry or falls on the lashes. This shouldn't happen," says Cory.

On cream eye shadows?
Cream eye shadows are not too great for Indians as the sweat etc. will get it off, also it collect in the creases of the skin. Using cream eye shadows in cities where the whether is cool is a good idea. Cream eye shadows give a beautiful finish, so what you can so is top it with powder eye shadow to stabilize the color.

Kohl Pencils

Cory's Home Made Kohl Recipe
Cory uses home made kohl. You can make kohl at home by burning a ghee diya with camphor; you then collect the soot in the diya. The soot is then mixed with ghee and applied. In the old days, pearls were also burned to make kohl. Cory mixes black eye shadow powder to his home made kohl and then uses it on his clients.

Mascaras
"Mascaras are a very very important part of your make-up," says Cory Walia.

Cory says:
"Even though all brands have mascaras, I'm very picky about what I like. That's why the two listed above are the only ones that I use."

Preity Zinta opted for a gorgeous, heavily lined eye anchored not only by immaculately structured brows, but also by the most natural matte lip color (one of the night's best!)

Gauri Khan’s dramatic red-carpet look included neutral silver eyes and bronzed cheeks; Shahrukh Khan's wife kept her makeup from going overboard by finishing it with a frosty pale lip.

How To Apply Mascara by Bijal Soni, MUA for Dior

Do not let your eyes go unnoticed. Apply mascara the simple way, look your best and leave others stunned!

Bijal Soni, make-up artist for Christian Dior says, "Mascara defines your lashes and highlights the shape of your eyes. Not only does mascara accentuate the shape of your eyes but also transforms your look from catty to innocent."

Eye Catcher
Mascara can enhance or diminish your look if not applied properly. Follow these easy-to-apply tips.

Step 1:
Always apply mascara after applying eye shadow and the liner. Remove excess eye shadow powder droppings with a cotton bud. For small or lesser lashes use a protein primer before applying mascara.

Step 2: With an eyelash curler, curl lashes upwards and then while looking towards the floor apply mascara in upward sweeps. Let dry and after a couple of minutes put another application if needed.
  • To give an innocent look, go for a regular brush – a thin brush shaped like a Christmas tree. Thin from the top but thick from below. The brush also gives length to your lashes, which adds to your look.

    Aishwarya Bachchan

  • For Aishwarya Bachchan's lashes – buy mascara, which includes volumizing and thickening feature. This will make your lashes look heavy, doll like. Always ensure that mascara comes with a thicker brush to add to the effect.
  • To make volumizing last longer, use a single coat of water-proof mascara (Diorshow Waterproof Mascara) after applying the first application.
The Curl Effect
Add curl to your eyelashes with a parallel-looking brush. This is the medium brush, which gives a curling and volumizing effect.

Step 3: To avoid the lashes from sticking together – gently move the brush in a zig-zag motion to separate the lashes. Or use an eyelash comb to separate the lashes. However Dior Diorshow Mascara includes a feature where the brush is designed specifically to separate the lashes.

Step 4: Apply mascara on the lower lashes as well, but not as intense – just a light brush will do. Move the brush from the base to the tip.

Do It Right

  • If you have a darker skin tone or have of dark circles, it is advisable to experiment with various colors in blue, deep blue, green or maroon.
  • Apply thin eyeliner and not a thick one (most make-up artists prefer a thinner one).
  • Apply mascara to give you a complete different look. For simple occasions or for regular wear, apply mascara at the tip of your lashes to give a normal look.
  • Use a good eye make-up remover to take off the mascara at night before bed or whenever needed. Moisten the tissue or cotton for smooth removal.
Funky Eyes!

Expert Speak
Make-up artist Clint Fernandes says, "When buying mascara, ensure it is non-flaking, non-smudging and easy to apply. It also depends on what you are looking for. It is best to check over the counter by trying out lengthening, volumizing or thickening and then buy what suits you the best."

Video Feature: Clint Fernandes' How-To-Natural Look

Popular to the stars and fashion runways, Clint Fernandes has worked on the most gorgeous faces in the industry. His favorite face he says is Amrita Arora. He thinks she has gorgeous and flawless skin. His successful resume includes the likes of Rani Mukherji, Deepika Padukone and Malaika Arora Khan.

Mallika Sherawat's Make-up Breakdown by Colette Cormier

Yes, I know what you ladies are thinking, she's gone crazy to post a make-up breakdown for Mallika Sherawat who's had more bad make-up and hair days than anyone else in Bollywood. I assure you she looks absolutely gorgeous. This was taken during the time she was promoting "The Myth" with Jackie Chan at the Toronto Film Festival in 2005. Colette Cormier, her make-up artist, made her look absolutely stunning. Bollywood are you listening and watching?

Face
Colette first started Mallika's look by applying Cinema Secrets Ultimate Foundation Palette in Mallika's skintone. She then buffed in NARS Blush in Orgasm into Mallika's cheeks for a fresh and glowy look.

Eyes
Colette started to transform her gorgeous eyes by applying M.A.C Eye Shadow in Woodwinked on the lid, around the tear duct, and lining part way under the eye as well. She then applied M.A.C Eye Shadow in Carbon on the outter one-third of the lid and then smoked it out further under the eye with the same shadow. She applied M.A.C Eye Shadow in Folie to the crease to make the whole look pop. To highlight her brow bones she applies M.A.C Eye Shadow in Ricepaper and adds NARS Blush in Orgasm to blend it out. To line her upper lid she used Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Liner in Black Ink for a smokey effect and used Annabelle Smooth Liner in Black in the inner rims of the eye.

Lips
To enhance Mallika's gorgeous pout Colette lined her lips with M.A.C Lip Pencil in Spice and filled it in with Vasanti Lipstick in Jordan.

Make-up Trend: Bronzey Eyes

The award for Best Eye Makeup goes to... Kareena Kapoor. And Best Supporting Role? Her favorite makeup artist Mickey Contractor, who transformed her eyes into shimmery bronze, black-rimmed and lush-lashed pieces of art.

Attach several fake lash clusters to the outer half of each upper lash line, then line the outer half of upper lids with Bobbi Brown long-wear gel liner in Black (it'll stay put through any tear-jerker acceptance speech). Smudge the line with a Q-tip and add another coat. Extend the line slightly up and out beyond the lashes. Sweep deep bronze cream shadow over lids, into creases, and out towards your temples. Finally, top lashes (including fakes) with two coats of rich, black mascara.

Vimi and Mickey Talk About Spring/Summer 2008

M.A.C Masters
The looks were translated on Indian models by Vimi Joshi, Senior Artist, MAC Pro, Middle East & India and Mickey Contarctor, Director, Makeup Artistry, India. The makeup was well defined and adapted to the Indian looks and needs by the artists. Joshi who worked on the ‘Eye Max’ theme, emphasized the use of color in India and remarked on the beauty of Indian eyes. Mickey went on to bring ‘A Skin Thing’ closer home by first moisturizing and then mattifying the skin to ensure the skin does not shine through given the exigencies of the Indian tropics.

Spring Summer in India

Mickey On Indian makeup, Bollywood trends & More
Mickey Contractor, Director, Makeup Artistry, India for M.A.C briefly outlined the trends in makeup in Bollywood. “In Bollywood, it’s the makeup artist who chooses the brand that is to be used on the star unless the star is allergic to certain products and emphasizes on a particular brand”. He adds “in terms of makeup, girls have become much more approachable, there is a calming down of makeup compared to the loudness of the past!” “Given the themes of Indian movies that may have wedding scenes, one cannot go very light on makeup with colors” and moreover “colors are also used to define the various characters”. About his particular style Mickey says “I have never been text-bookish, shape of the face is not important, one has to keep the individuality of the person in mind”. Mickey has used M.A.C for the past 13 years starting with lipsticks and is now full-fledged with M.A.C.

Make-up Trend: On-The-Go Make-up

"I'm not a big make-up person, but I always have an eye pencil and lip gloss in my handbag," says Kareena Kapoor, whose face always looks fresh and immaculately touched up.

Reapply gloss before photo ops and after each drink, meal or smooch session. If eye liner looks runny or smudged during the night, wipe below the lower lash line with a tissue and lightly feather on another line.

Video Feature: Cory Walia's Prediction for Spring/Summer 2008

I've done tons of posts on Cory Walia here, he is an extremely talented make-up artist who has worked on many famous faces such as Katrina Kaif, Kareena Kapoor and Aishwarya Rai. He has also worked as a make-up artist on prestigious events such as London, Milan, and India Fashion Week.

Vimi J Weighs In On Lashes and Brows

Doe Eyed Flutter
Flirty eyelashes can speak volumes but most of us aren’t exactly blessed with abundant lashes. Luckily, fake lashes do the trick. Vimi Joshi, M.A.C senior artist, India and Middle East says, “There are many types of false eyelashes available in an array of shapes, sizes and colors. You can use a full set of lashes, (she recommends M.A.C #6 Lash) to give volume or you can use individual lashes in the corner of your eyes to create a “cat-like” effect. She recommends M.A.C #20 Lash. If you’re feeling funky you can even go for colored ones! If you have to cut the lashes to suit your own eye shape, always cut from the outside (the longer side). Try and get the false lashes as close to the natural lash line as possible.

Hair-Raising Brows
Most women complain of lacking the perfect shaped arched eyebrows. It’s inevitably scanty or
bushy! All sorts of remedies are looked into and experimented with, but to no avail. Enter 'filled-in' eyebrows and there’s a ray of hope. Vimi says, “The thumb rule is that ‘eyebrows are sisters, not twins’. They are meant to be slightly uneven. The key is to get them looking as similar to each other as possible. You can do this by filling in the eyebrows either by using an eyebrow pencil (M.A.C Eye Brows) in flick-like strokes or you can use a small angled brush (M.A.C Brush #266) with an eye shadow (M.A.C Brow Shader) in a color close to your eyebrows to recreate the hair shape.”

Video Feature: Make-Up Artist Shalini Vashisht at Work

I had posted a bridal make-up breakdown by renowned make-up artist Shalini Vashisht here. She is an extremely talented woman, in this video she gives "the girl next door" a glamorous makeover.

Make-up Trend: Full, Groomed Eyebrows

Bollywood's full of slim waists, but when it comes to brows, they go big, wide, and plus-size. Add wow to your brows by touching them up with powder one shade lighter than the color of your brow hair.

Keep it clean! Pluck away stray hairs. To avoid removing more than hair at once (wide tweezers may pull out more than one hair at a time and create a hole), opt for a fine-point tweezer instead.

Kareena Kapoor's Don Make-up Breakdown

I was online, looking for some inspiration. I cam across a Dutch magazine, giving their readers a breakdown of Kareena's make-up in the 2006 Blockbuster 'Don'. I personally didn't think too much of her in the song (she didn't do justice to the song or the famous dancer, "Helen"). But, what I did love was her golden-bronzed make-up. On to the make-up breakdown

Face
Apply Red Earth Secret Potion for gorgeous and radiant skin, this covers imperfections as well evens out the skin tone. Next, apply Red Earth Endless Summer Bronzing Compact in Golden Desert to contour the cheeks as well give the skin a healthy glow. For a golden-brown effect apply Maybelline Expert Wear Blush in Brown 58.

Eyes
Apply Red Earth Trio Contrast Eye Shadows in GR035 (since the quad isn't available). Sweep the lighter shade onto your lid. Blend the medium shade into your crease. Apply the lightest shade to your browbone and the inner corner of your eye. Also apply a smokey eye liner (Red Earth Magic Line Kohl Eye Liner Pencil) on your upper lid and inner rims of your eyes. For eyes that pop apply Red Earth Sun Rays False Eye Lashes.

Lips
Line your lips with L'oreal Contour Parfait Lip Liner, then generously apply L'oreal Glam Shine in Coral Strass for a pouty finish.

Make-up Trend: Flirty Make-up

Pancakes are best left for breakfast! Today's natural-looking, goof-proof makeup is designed to blend in seamlessly, by letting your skin shine through. To get Aishwarya Bachchan's flawless, flushed face, spread sheer tinted moisturizer over skin, then dab a rose-colored blush stick over cheeks and lips.

When done right, blush makes you look happier and healthier. Dab directly onto the upper apples of your cheeks and diffuse outward by blending with fingertips.

KENZO AMOUR 'Indian Holi' Eau de Parfum (Limited Edition)

This gorgeous perfume was brought to my attention by the lovely Style Page. In India, Holi is the festival of colors and love. It has inspired Kenzo to create Indian Holi, the first limited edition of KENZO AMOUR. A new fragrance, an eau de parfum. A joyfully sensual floral musk. Rose and red berries add a joyful twist to the notes of KENZO AMOUR. By the way, if you're wondering what the Indian scripture says, it reads Holi hai!. Which translates to "It's Holi!"

East and West Make-up Trends with Dior Make-Up Artist: Divya Chablani

Deepika in an Indian look (left) Deepika in a Western look (right)
Step 1
Cleanse, tone and moisturize before applying make up.
Divya's Picks: Dior Self-Foaming Cleanser, Dior Energizing Toner, Dior HydrAction Deep Hydration Defense Fluid.

Step 2
Apply foundation. While choosing foundation, one should always choose a shade similar to that of the skin tone or a tinge darker. Foundation needs to be dotted all over the face and blended outward towards the hair line. To set the foundation, dust it with loose powder. Always blend foundation down to the neck.
Divya's Picks: DiorSkin Forever, Dior Extreme Fix

Step 3
Fill in the eyebrows. Then comes the eye shadow. For a desi look, apply a highlight on the brow bone, the 'it' colors — an iridescent brown smoke on the lids contoured with black eye shadow (Dior 5 Color Shades Eye Shadows in Sweet Illusion, Nightdust), a black eyeliner on upper lid with lots of kajal on in the lower lids. Add mascara on lashes. The season’s trend is to add colored mascara on tips of the lashes. This helps catch more light and gives a dramatic look.
For the western look for the eyes, apply a highlight on the brow bone. Use fresh pinks, peaches, apricots or lavender on the lid contour with similar tone colors with darker shades (Dior 5 Color Shades Eye Shadows in Pink Attitude, Seascape, Sunset Cafe, Flower Blossom, Stylish Move). A thin eyeliner could be applied on the upper lid which could be smudged and followed by mascara.
Divya's Picks: Dior Crayon Sourcils Poudre, Dior Diorliner Liquid Eye Liner, Dior Crayon Khol, Dior Diorshow Mascara in Black and Azure Blue

Step 4
Highlight cheekbones with blush in smooth upward strokes. Rust and bronze go well with desi skin. For the western look, dust a fresh apricot/pink color. For the heavy Indian look dust an iridescent bronzer all over the face.
Divya's Picks: DiorBlush in Golden Earth and Precious Pink, Dior Bronze Sun Powder in Bronze Tan

Step 5
For the lips a rosy brown lipstick for the desi look. For the western look pinks and medium browns.
Divya's Picks: Dior Addict Lipstick in Rose Mirage/Dior Addict Lipstick in Infra Rose and Polychrome Brown

M.A.C Make-up Artist Vimi J on Winter '08 Trends (Part Two)

Make-up this season is all about taking inspiration from the past and making it futuristic, or new age. Permanent beauty themes are now updated with new techniques and possibilities. Classic beauty statements are being translated into makeup that responds to the new digital age.

Skin now goes beyond the pale and natural look into a technically transgressive trend that works with brand new possibilities of texture, three-dimensionality and light–effects.

“Skin this fall-winter should be highly-sculpted and 3D. This can be achieved by using M.A.C Studio Tech that matches your skin tone perfectly. You can then use deeper-toned blushes (M.A.C Powder Blushes in Frankly Scarlet, Flirt & Tease, Fever, Format, Ambering Rose) to add depth and dimension to you face. Finish the look by adding a highlighter (M.A.C Mineralize Skinfinish in Light Flush) on your cheekbones or under the brow and on the bow of your lips,” says Vimi Joshi, senior artist, M.A.C.

The eyes continue to be the main focus. “This season is all about sultry eyes that are smoked up using deep blues and grays (M.A.C A Mei Bold Eyes),” she says. “You can line your eyes using M.A.C Eye Kohl in Smolder, apply M.A.C Eye Shadow in Print all around the eye area and make sure that it is perfectly blended. To finish off the look, use M.A.C Plush Lash Mascara,” she adds.

Kareena Kapoor donning the 'Elizabeth Taylor' Look

Another big comeback is the Elizabeth Taylor look, which inspires this season cat’s eyes. However this time, it comes with a modern touch. Texture and pigment are all important in channeling a classically Taylorish smoky eye into modern territory: think in terms of metals infused with sumptuous jewel shades, brushed alloys, zinc, aluminum, lead, nickel and titanium, interjected with baroque gem-tones that infuse smoke with a lurex-shot finish.

Amrita Rao is wearing M.A.C Lipstick in Girl About Town

This winter, wear your lips loud and proud with splashes of bold colors (M.A.C Lipsticks in Lady Danger, Vegas Volt, Full Fuchsia, Violetta, CB96). “You can also line your lips using a lip pencil and then add a layer of lip gloss,” suggests Joshi.

Kareena is wearing M.A.C Nail Lacquer in Rocker

Wear aubergines, deep purples and deep reds in metallic textures on your nails (M.A.C Nail Lacquers in Boom!, Dark Angel, Rocker).

Vimi emphasizes the need to be experimental with your makeup. “Have fun, try out some new looks and don't hold back. It’s only makeup and it will wash off.”

OPI Nail Polish India Inspired Collection

Around two weeks back, I posted OPI's India Inspired Collection, which can be found here. Here are two more promotional pictures for it. I think the model looks absolutely stunning. Her jewelery, and make-up looks fabulous!

In addition to the stunning nail polish collection that includes nine gorgeous shades...
I'm India Mood For Love, ElePhantasic Pink, Black Cherry Chutney, Keys To My Karma, MonSooner or Later, Moon Over Mumbai, Yoga-ta Get This Blue, Get Me To The Taj On Time, Curry Up Don't Be Late

...it also includes nail polish-lip liner-lipstick trios
Charmed By A Snake (bronze), Lunch At The Delhi (coral),
Royal Rajah Ruby
(burgundy-red)

An excerpt from OPI about the new collection:

Color has the energy to excite, to soothe, to charm. And there has never been a better, brighter moment for color than Spring/Summer 2008! The season’s sunny, high-energy palette for nails and lips is the ideal complement to the new fashions and it’s all here in the India Collection by OPI. Luscious fuchsias, corals, oranges, and reds look fresh now on nails and lips. In the mood for hot pink? Try I’m Indi-a Mood for Love. Bring a splash of color to fingertips and toes (especially in open-toed wedge heels) with MonSooner or Later (rich orange-red) and Keys to My Karma (vivid red). And if your karma calls for coral, try Lunch at the Delhi on nails or lips. These shades are wonderful with the fashion palette of rosy pink, magenta, turquoise, yellow (the new “it” color), tangerine, and geranium red, often seen as splashes against nude and natural tones and in bold, graphic prints. Lighter shades for nails are so right when worn with the season’s choice of alluring, feminine fabrics. Try pale opal Get Me to the Taj on Time with delicate dresses of flowing chiffon, organza, tulle, and liquid jersey (very romantic on toes during a midnight walk on the beach). Choose Moon Over Mumbai (dove grey) with spring’s must-have dress, the body-skimming sheath, in watercolor tones of blush, ivory, lilac, light blue, pistachio, or taupe. And candy-carnation ElePhantastic Pink nails complement fashion details like sheer overlays, tiered skirts, ruffles, and pleats. Neutrals and metallics add a sophisticated touch of color. Royal Rajah Ruby, a jeweled burgundy, and Charmed by a Snake, a bold bronze, look modern worn on nails or lips; shimmery gold Curry Up Don’t Be Late!, deliciously deep Black Cherry Chutney, and dark indigo Yoga-ta Get this Blue! are must-haves for pedicures. Try these shades with fashion’s long, fluid tunics and loosely cut trousers in mineral tones, as well with high-waisted pants and slouchy jackets (including an updated spin on the safari jacket). This season of color also features wide-brimmed hats, brightly colored bangles and clutch purses, and India-inspired beading and metallic embroidery embellishments. Let the India Collection intrigue you with colors wrapped in the energy of the season – chic, warm, and bright.
